Don't cut everything back yet!
As fall flowers fade and plants go to seed it can feel like it looks untidy but what seems like it needs cleanup can actually provide invaluable habitat and help! and are excellent examples of plants that support birds like goldfinches, chickadees, and sparrows. Standing stems and fallen vegetation can add shelter and overwintering habitat for beneficial insects. And sometimes a bloom looks spent to us, but still has valuable nutrition for pollinators. Want to know what those funny little pods on our Red Yucca are?

They’re seed capsules—and a sign that those brilliant summer flowers did exactly what they were supposed to do!

After Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) flowers are pollinated, some develop these chunky, three-lobed capsules. As they mature, the pods dry and eventually split open to reveal flat, dark seeds.

Another fun fact: despite the name, Red Yucca isn’t actually a yucca!

It’s a tough, water-wise perennial that loves sun & well-drained soil. Once established, it’s drought tolerant, handles heat like a champ, and shoots tall stalks of coral-red flowers that are especially attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.

By September, you can sometimes see the plant’s whole growing season at once—new buds, flowers, spent blooms and developing seed pods all on the same stalk.

It’s also a great reminder that a water-wise garden doesn’t have to mean giving up flowers, wildlife value, or interesting seasonal changes.

💧Cooler weather doesn’t mean it’s time to turn off the water!

As Northern Nevada heads toward fall, it’s easy to assume your garden needs less attention—but your plants still need consistent moisture.

Newly planted trees and shrubs especially need regular watering while their roots establish.
Perennials are still building strong root systems, even as growth above ground begins to slow.
Our days may be getting cooler, but our dry air and sunny afternoons can still pull plenty of moisture from the soil.

Your goal is to adjust your watering as conditions change—not simply stop watering because summer is ending.

A quick check can help: feel the soil one inch below the surface before deciding whether your plants need a drink. And remember that new transplants may have different needs than established landscaping.

Late summer and early fall are actually some of the best times to plant trees, shrubs and cold-hardy perennials in Northern Nevada.
