I got married 12 years ago, today... something 25 years of boyfriends (and women friends) had assured me would be difficult with such a close-knit relationship with my mother π
As a vintage lifestyle enthusiast, I didn't let these modern day criticisms take root, afterall, it is completely contemporary to send young women out into the world to sleep with a myriad of numbskulls in order to "find the right one" π
Historically, women stayed home, were protected and eventually made their way into the world with the guidance of their parents. And looking around today, I don't think it's a terribly wrong approach π€·π»ββοΈ
That I made a life with my mom, and not with a man, is unusual by today's standards, but that I managed to marry after 40 is a miracle by vintage standards π°π»ββοΈπ€΅π»ββοΈ
On my anniversary I like to remember those nay-sayers who poopoo'd the path I chose, the ones that looked down on my tight familial connection with a questioning air of disappointment. I reflect on those that scoffed when I returned home to be close to my mom instead of staying in the city alone. I remember the criticism I received about going home to help form and run a business with my mom instead of continuing to grind out a living in corporate America. I recall all of the soft condescension and advice to embrace independence and "grow up". I consider all of that negative input that didn't have an impact simply because I didn't let it π
My traditional values prioritized quality time with my parent over worldly measures of success, and eventually I found love and a rewarding partnership, as well π
In short, never hand your hope to the crowd, hold onto it like the precious gift that it is π₯°
