Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens

Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens as well as Central and South America under the name ‘Mobile Gardens’ for 12 years. So was born the passion for our lifelong indulgence.

For 46 years, Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens in Rhinebeck NY has been a grower of an extraordinary variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and ornamentals. From Manhattan to Rhinebeck, NY in 1979 we laid claim to 11 acres of land and built our first greenhouse, growing rare and tropical collectable plants that were sold mail order all over the U.S. Then a fuel crisis took its toll a

nd the need for a cash crop gave birth to our second greenhouse, coached and mentored by Clifford Tine, a third generation greenhouse plantsman of the now defunct New Jersey Botanical Gardens in Somerville. Next, getting a name change that wouldn’t confuse us with a trailer park or campground and presto Northern Dutchess Botanical Gardens appeared. For the next 27 years our two families developed our two botanical businesses into what we think is a very unique little niche in the horticultural community. The coolest thing about NDBG – is that it breathes – a working, living greenhouse operation where the plants we sell are the plants we grow right here. Whether from seed, cutting, plugs, roots or divisions they're grown here. So you could just walk around and see what we do to make the stock look the way it does – healthy, green and happy. Just watch out for the hoses, they’re everywhere. The sales yard is maintained outdoors comfortably situated between greenhouses nestled nicely in the back woods of Rhinebeck, off the beaten track in as relaxed a setting as a nursery can have. We’re set up in the most visitor friendly way we can think of. Each group of plants is set on their own benches or in the case of larger groups like perennials their own areas in alphabetical order and exceptional signage with pictures, culture and descriptions. The results make an easy, satisfying and informative plant buying experience for any level gardener. We’re happy to lure you Plant Nuts and Garden Meisters with some obscure annual or little known perennial, but we're most proud of the people who have become avid gardeners and credit us with their new found prowess. We know the hardest part of what we do is getting you here, but once you're here, you're spoiled and you’re ours! My favorite stories are those from people coming here for the first time.. Our roots run deep as now 2 of our 4 children have joined us. And with a range of 8 greenhouses and 3 holding houses on 70 acres the future looks bright. To our loyal customers we thank you for your patronage and support, to first timers whose curiosity we’'ve managed to tweak, know that you'll always be welcome to our horticultural family.

Our long awaited Water Dragon Daylilly cast out its first bloom today and it is impressive! Very large, sweetly fragrant and a magical purple with a ruffled edge and yellow center. Oh the combinations I can imagine with this color....

Absolutely loving what happens with the inventory line up by chance. The stunning Prince Charming butterfly bushes in the foreground of the burgundy canna is absolutely glorious. We played around with some massive containers and they are so fun!...Goes to show you- you don't need a big yard or large garden to enjoy cut flowers, privacy, supporting pollinators and even enjoying an edible assortment. Come on by and take advantage of some beautifully grown on seedling perennials that are not so seedling any more - and a full selection of more mature perennials from A-Z

We are here Wednesday-Sunday 9-noon. Any additional hours can easily be accommodated by reaching out to us via our socials or 845-303-6995

Share your tips below on how you're dealing with the lantern fly....

It may feel feudal but I have to believe one squarshed bug at a time is better than none. I find the dish soap to be effective immediately.

The first of the Floristan sunflowers are blooming. We love the mahogany hues on this one- we've still got an awesome selection of dutifully cared for annuals to choose from and enjoy color until the weather turns. Cut flowers, fillers, spillers...the works! Come on by this weekend to spruce up!

***please note tomorrow, Friday, we will be operating with an extra small staff because I, Marcella am gonna go pretend I know how to hit a golf ball for a few hours at a memorial tournament for a dear childhood friend. Your patience and understanding is always greatly appreciated.

Behold this iconic pairing that will effortlessly create that estate feel. Hydrangea standards and knock out roses 🤩 not all hydrangeas thrive in full sun but these limelight primes will- and when the blooms start taking on their rosie hue they will compliment the roses even more so!

So many styles, colors and performance habits to choose from.

Come see what's in store and see what happens to your space with the simple addition of a few plants. We may be a little bias but there is nothing better then what happens when plants enter the scene 🐝🌳🏡🪻🕊️🦋
