Well my fodder system has started out well! I started out small but after finding out it worked so well and was so easy I made a larger one! My horses and chickens love it! The savings are huge! I figure it will completely cut my grain bill out (except the wheat bran I give for sand and roughage) and my hay is down to about 2/3rds less! If anyone is interested let me know and I will be more than happy to share what I have learned! I do not claim to be an expert but so far I have had pretty good luck! I am a bit worried about warm weather and mold. I will have to keep a good eye on it and let you know how it goes!

With the cost of hay going up and my old age setting in I thought it was time to seriously think about what to do with my horses. The thought of getting rid of them was way too painful especially when I have had these two for so long! I was doing a little research online about alternative feeds and found a fairly "new" craze but realistically it has been around for a long long time and is called sprouting fodder. You can spend a whole lot of money on a commercial sized system or attempt to do it yourself. Well I don't have alot of money so I decide to try to sprout a few things in my basement for my chickens first. Woila!! It works! But since I work all day it is nearly impossible to do it correctly because you need to keep it ventilated and watered several times a day. Hence the need for an automated system. Well I have picked up a few things off of ebay and amazon and decided to put together my own fodder system. Getting the barley was another issue as the only farmer who carries it is 1 hour away. But I contacted the local feed store and they can order it for me. In the meantime I am using whole wheat and black oil sunflower seeds. The chickens love them! I have tried oats and corn but the oats just don't want to sprout and get slimey. The corn may sprout but grows slow or molds. This weekend I am going to put it all together and let you know how it goes! I may even send pictures if it looks halfway decent! Ha Ha!
Wish me luck!!!
