There’s an old tradition that says you should tell the bees when something important happens in the family. 🐝

Weddings, births, losses, big changes — generations of beekeepers believed the bees should be included in the moments that shape a household.

With wedding season close to home here at Hi Vue, this little piece of folklore feels especially sweet.

Because on a farm, the bees are part of the rhythm of everyday life. They move with the seasons, work alongside the blossoms, and remind us that even the smallest creatures have a place in the story.

So as our family prepares for another meaningful milestone, I'm making sure the bees know too. 💛

A little tradition.
A little farm life.
A little love in the air.

Have you ever heard of the tradition of “telling the bees”?

Somehow Matt and I actually had 2.5 children. We started with 2 and gained a 3rd that was partially grown.
Through life's twisting and turning road our step nephew Andrew came to be one of our own. From the kid that came into our house with a laundry basket of stuff to the amazing man he is today we couldn't love him more. White To Blue Collar Contracting

Well ok, we can a little more because he gave us our first grandchild Henley and now our daughter in love ( we adore her). Tatianna Leblanc
And yes I sobbed as we danced the mother and son dance at his wedding.

The chalets they choose for their wedding favors couldn't be more appropriate as they are creating a house full of sweetness.

Some Hi Vue products begin with a recipe.
This one begins with a family story. 🍁

Our Maple Vinegar is made from Hi Vue maple syrup, water, time, and a living “mother” that has been passed down through my family for generations.

My grandmother, Orpha, started the original batch more than 100 years ago. Since then, our family has continued to feed it, care for it, and carry it forward — one barrel at a time.

In vinegar making, the “mother” is what helps transform the mixture over time. I can best describe it as a little like yeast in beer: it is the living culture that makes the process possible.

At Hi Vue, maple syrup and water are mixed, the mother is added, and the vinegar is then left to age slowly in wooden barrels for at least 9 to 12 months before bottling. The result is a small-batch, organic maple vinegar with a true maple flavor that is a little sweeter and milder than many vinegars.

And now, we’re experimenting with something new. We’re currently aging maple vinegar in whiskey barrels from Adirondack Barrel Company, testing three different char levels: toast, medium, and Level 3 char. This new smooth-tasting vinegar will be available soon, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

It is part kitchen staple, part family heirloom, and part reminder that some of the best things on the farm cannot be rushed.

Use it in salad dressings, marinades, stir-fries, roasted vegetables, slaws, or anywhere you want a tangy maple twist. Around here, it has become one of those ingredients we keep reaching for — simple, versatile, and full of story.

From Grammie Orpha’s original batch to the bottles we share today, every drop carries a little piece of Hi Vue history.

Have you tried cooking with maple vinegar yet? 🍁

✔️✔️ Bliss Garden finished. Tractors make life better.

Julie's wedding will be taking place here in about a month (excuse me while I quietly panic in the corner).
Took a few different days to get this far with the new garden. Going to add a few rocks for accents.... the farm has plenty 🪨 😆
We had a good soaking rain so the new plants should have a good start.

These trees stand where once the Bliss house stood. My great grandfather bought this hundred acre parcel to go along with his farm. Which is why yes 120+ years later...... this is STILL referred to as the Bliss field.( It's a farming thing. )

Thank you to William McLarin, a recent Harvest Host guest, for this kind Google review and for taking the time to share such thoughtful words.

“Impressive setup in a beautiful area in the middle of nowhere. Proprietor Jessica really knows her stuff.”

That means a lot to us because Hi Vue is more than a place to pick up maple syrup. It’s a farm, a family story, a working sugarhouse, a farm store, and a peaceful little piece of Vermont tucked into the hills of Richford.

Whether you’re staying with us through Harvest Hosts, Airbnb or HipCamp, visiting the area, looking for local gifts, or just want to see what we have to offer, we’d love to welcome you.

Stop by the farm store and see us.

I brought one of my farm kids home today to get a load of hay in. I buy a load from my neighbor so its super handy for him to drop a wagon off when its ready. I loaded the bucket and Mya had the hot sweaty part of stacking in the hay mow.
Dale and Murphy will have plenty to eat. Then Mya Marquis helped clean out the entire horse barn. We sorted through everything. It was several years overdue for a good cleaning.
The hardest part is actually being able to get Mya to have time to come help me - she's an incredible worker for any age and she's in high demand for her time.

Oak barrel aged maple vinegar - 1st official batch canned and ready to label. I began experimenting with using oak barrels to age our maple vinegar a couple of years ago.
I'm sourcing the barrels from Adirondack Barrel Cooperage in Saratoga NY. I still have some batches going in the food grade plastic barrels we've used for years, but now I'm venturing into the unknown world of char!
This barrel was a medium toast or very light char. Its aged about 9 months.
It's still pure maple vinegar, just with a smoother than ever finish and a light hint of oak. Perfect timing for the greens that are just starting to come from my garden 😋
I'll be sharing more soon about the history of our Maple Vinegar 🍁

Now to finish labeling and get this order shipped out - Maple Vinegar available on the website or in the farmstand (as soon as I get it over there)!

I have just spent the afternoon pausing between chores and sitting on my porch watching juveniles learn the ropes..... blue jays, gold finch, purple finch, rose breasted grosbeaks, and more. They're so funny to listen to as they try to call mom and dad.
Now I'm listening to some barred owls down in the lower piece and soon the coyotes will start.
I needed these pauses today to just sit, observe and to be in the moment.

How are you spending your summer evening?
