The Dime That Should Not Exist: The Unique 1873-CC No Arrows Dime

A Tiny Weight Change Created America’s Rarest Carson City Coin that Sold for $3.6 Million

A microscopic change in federal law created one of the greatest rarities in American numismatics.

Congress increased the dime’s authorized weight by only 0.18 grain. That equals roughly 0.012 gram. Yet that almost invisible difference condemned virtually all freshly made Carson City dimes to destruction.

A federal weight change doomed 12,400 Carson City dimes, but one survived. Its journey from a 17-cent auction lot to a $3.6 million rarity forms one of the greatest stories in American numismatics.

1942/1 Mercury Dime: The Wartime Mint Mistake That Put Two Years on One Coin

How a Wartime Mint Mix-Up Created a $120,000 Dime

A single dime can tell a surprisingly large story.

The 1942/1 Mercury dime carries two dates. It also connects the wartime economy, old Mint technology, a hurried engraving department, and one of the greatest circulation finds of the 20th century.

Yet collectors often misunderstand how the error happened.

No Mint employee punched a “2” over a “1.” The Mint did not strike a finished 1941 dime again with 1942 dies. Instead, workers created an obverse die with impressions from two different dated hubs.

1939 Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Reverse: The Five-Cent Rarity Still Hiding in Plain Sight

The 1939 Jefferson Nickel already gives collectors more to study than most second-year U.S. coin issues. Yet one variety towers above the rest.

That coin is the 1939 Jefferson Nickel Doubled Die Reverse, FS-801. Many collectors still call it the “Doubled Monticello” nickel. However, that nickname sells the coin short.

Yes, MONTICELLO shows strong doubling. But FIVE CENTS does, too. In fact, FIVE CENTS often shows the most dramatic spread. That makes this coin a true Doubled Die Reverse, not just a doubled building name.

Even better, this famous Jefferson nickel can still turn up in circulation, old collections, dealer stock, and even unattributed holders. That gives it rare cross-market appeal. Registry collectors want top-grade Full Steps examples. Meanwhile, roll hunters and sharp-eyed collectors still have a reason to check every 1939 nickel they see.

Fugio Cents: The First Regular-Issue United States Coin

Over the past several years, numismatists have debated the status of Fugio Cents. Many collectors have asked a critical question: Do Fugio Cents represent the first regular-issue United States coins?

For decades, confusion has surrounded these coins. Some experts questioned whether contract coinage qualifies as a national issue. Others doubted whether Congress legally authorized the Fugio Cents at all. As a result, earlier references often labeled them as patterns rather than circulating coinage.

1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar in PCGS MS-67

The 1878-CC Morgan Silver Dollar stands at the beginning of one of America’s most collected coin series. More importantly, it represents the first Morgan dollar struck at the legendary Carson City Mint.

While more than 2.2 million pieces were produced, very few survive in elite condition today. In the highest Mint State grades, this issue becomes a true condition rarity.

And that is where the story becomes extraordinary.

1938 Jefferson Nickel : A Collector’s Guide

In 1938, the United States Mint introduced the Jefferson nickel, bringing an end to the Buffalo nickel after a 25-year production run. The new five-cent piece honored Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States and a Founding Father.

The redesign followed a public competition held in 1937. The Treasury Department opened the contest to “all American sculptors.” German-born American artist Felix Oscar Schlag won the competition and received a $1,000 award for his submission.
