A Wall Street executive’s remarkable collection includes three No. 1 CAC Registry sets, a nearly unsurpassed Saint-Gaudens set, and the $1.8 million finest-certified 1911-D Indian Eagle.

A Wall Street fund manager entered the rare coin market as a novice in 2012. Fourteen years later, he owns what Legend Numismatics calls the finest collection of 20th-century United States gold coins ever assembled.

The Half Dome Collection focuses on Indian Head Quarter Eagles, Half Eagles, and Eagles. It also includes a complete Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle set. A single dime can tell a surprisingly large story.

The 1942/1 Mercury dime carries two dates. It also connects the wartime economy, old Mint technology, a hurried engraving department, and one of the greatest circulation finds of the 20th century.

Yet collectors often misunderstand how the error happened.

No Mint employee punched a “2” over a “1.” The Mint did not strike a finished 1941 dime again with 1942 dies. Instead, workers created an obverse die with impressions from two different dated hubs.
