New analysis from the American Medical Association highlights the continued concentration of the pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) market.

According to the AMA, the four largest PBMs controlled 75% of the national PBM market in 2024, and 94% of the local PBM markets studied were considered highly concentrated under federal antitrust thresholds.

These findings reinforce concerns being raised across healthcare about competition, transparency, patient access and the growing vertical integration of PBMs, insurers and other healthcare entities.

For Mississippi’s independent pharmacies, meaningful PBM reform remains essential to protecting patient access to community pharmacy care and ensuring a fair and competitive marketplace.

MIPA CEO David Roberts met earlier today with University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Donna Strum and Dr. Adam Pate, Chair and Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice, to learn more about the work of the School of Pharmacy and its role in educating and training the next generation of pharmacists.

The conversation also focused on the future of pharmacy in Mississippi, the challenges and opportunities facing independent community pharmacies, and ways MIPA and the School of Pharmacy can work together to advance independent pharmacy across the state.

Dr. Kristopher Harrell, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, also joined the group during the visit.

MIPA thanks Dr. Strum, Dr. Pate, and Dr. Harrell for their time and for the opportunity to learn more about the important work underway at the School of Pharmacy. We look forward to continuing to strengthen this partnership and working together to advance independent pharmacy across Mississippi.

Great turnout in Oxford for the second stop of MIPA’s 2026 Regional Meetings!

We have a packed room this afternoon at the Oxford Conference Center as pharmacists from across North Mississippi come together for continuing education and an opportunity to connect with colleagues.

Ronn Pierce, JD, LCSW, is leading today’s CE program focused on addiction and the important role pharmacists play in addressing substance use disorders.

It’s great to see our independent pharmacy community coming together for education, connection, and conversation. Thank you to everyone who joined us today! We appreciate your participation and your continued commitment to serving patients and communities across Mississippi.

Mississippi’s entire U.S. House delegation is now united in support of H.R. 6610, the Pharmacists Fight Back Act!

MIPA extends our appreciation to Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Representative Trent Kelly, Congressman Mike Ezell, and Congressman Michael Guest for cosponsoring this important bipartisan PBM reform legislation.

Having all four members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation supporting H.R. 6610 sends a strong message about the importance of protecting independent community pharmacies and preserving access to pharmacy care for the patients they serve.
