Here are some interesting items in the Mid-Summer Online Auction! Have you ever seen Uranium Glass? This unusual glassware was very popular in the late 1800's and early 1900's!

Here's a few more facts about this interesting item:
1. It really glows! Uranium glass fluoresces a brilliant neon green under ultraviolet (black) light, making it one of the easiest antiques to identify.
2. It contains real uranium. The glass typically contains 0.1%–2% uranium oxide, which was added to create its distinctive yellow-green color.
3. It dates back nearly 200 years. The first commercially produced uranium glass appeared in the 1830s, making many surviving pieces nearly two centuries old.
4. It was everyday tableware. During the 1920s and 1930s, many families used uranium glass plates, bowls, cups, and serving dishes every day.
5. Production paused during World War II. Civilian production largely stopped because uranium was reserved for the U.S. government's wartime nuclear program.
6. It is slightly radioactive—but only a little. Most pieces emit radiation only slightly above natural background levels, making them safe to display and handle as collectibles.
7. No two pieces glow exactly the same. The intensity of the glow depends on the amount of uranium used, the glass formula, and the thickness of the piece.
8. The glow is fluorescence, not radioactivity. The green glow comes from ultraviolet light exciting the uranium ions in the glass—it isn't caused by the glass "glowing" because it's radioactive.
9. It's one of the most collected antique glass categories. From elegant Victorian art glass to Depression-era kitchenware, uranium glass has become a favorite among collectors worldwide.
