“Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad”

While a nationwide surge in cyclosporiasis cases has many concerned about eating certain produce, experts say locally grown fruits and vegetables – like those sold at farmers markets – may be a safer option.

Cyclosporiasis, which is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, is usually spread through contaminated food such as produce items or water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While not a total guarantee, experts told USA TODAY that produce from farmers markets could be a safer option because they are likely sourced from local growers.

Perennials For A Colorful Summer Garden - available at Goffle Brook Farms
Just because July is here, doesn’t mean you can’t make some changes in your garden by adding a few new perennials. There are plenty of options, regardless of the type of space you need to fill. Not only can you plant in July, but it can be one of the best summer months to liven up your garden.

By filling your garden, flower beds and well-decorated backyard with these low-maintenance perennials, you’re guaranteed fresh blooms, beautiful colors and sweet scents every year — which could mean three to five years and maybe even over a century of a few hardy perennial flowers. Because the July sun is so warm, opt for doing your gardening and planting in the evening. This will give your plants time to soak up some water before the morning sun and the heat of the following day. Water your plants while they are still in their nursery pot and you are prepping your garden and digging your holes. This will help cut down on the risk of transplant shock. Once your plant is in the ground, water it again.

New Jersey local farms and locally grown produce are not affected by the current iceberg lettuce recall. The recall—initiated by Taylor Farms due to a cyclosporiasis outbreak—is strictly tied to iceberg lettuce sourced from a specific region in central Mexico, not local New Jersey agriculture.

Here we go again. Another SCORCHER coming our way. So what’s a gardener to do? How about Drought-Tolerant Perennials for Containers and Garden Beds!

Sedums are the ultimate "survivor" pot plants because their succulent leaves store water for weeks. Sedum 'Dazzleberry' is a compact, drought-tolerant herbaceous perennial famous for its smoky blue-gray foliage and massive 6- to 8-inch, raspberry-pink flowerheads. Growing about 6–8 inches tall and spreading 18 inches, it thrives in full sun and poor, well-draining soil, making it perfect for borders, rock gardens, or containers.

Available at the Garden Center. We have an extensive selection of drought tolerant perennials to choose from, many of which are native plants.

Kurt Says - Whew – we are in for a “SCORCHER” this week with temperatures peaking in the mid to high 90s and heat indexes over 100. So what do you do to help your plants and garden beds deal with this onslaught of heat and humidity while you bask in the A.C. Well to begin…

All plants are susceptible to withering and damage during a heat wave. New plants, however, are more likely to suffer irreparable damage because they are not established in the garden yet. They have not developed much-needed deep taproots, which stay moist longer than shallower roots and help search for water when water is scarce.

Always paying attention to the watering needs of plants, especially new ones, is important, and a heat wave is a critical time in any plant’s life. Develop a couple of good habits so your plants not only survive a heat wave but thrive.

Watering

1 – Water plants deeply during morning, when temperatures are coolest. Apply at least 1 inch of water to moisten their soil thoroughly. Watering encourages plant roots to grow deeper, where they are less susceptible to heat. Place a soaker hose around your new plants, and set it to emit a small trickle of water for about one or two hours.

2 – Feel the new plants’ soil in mid-afternoon to late afternoon. If it is dry to the touch at about a 1-inch depth, then apply another 1/2 to 1 inch of water to the soil.

3 – Water the plants again the next morning, and continue with this watering schedule as long as the heat wave.

4 - Move pots and hanging baskets to shadier locations. Those full, lush hanging baskets can almost be impossible to keep watered during hot, windy days. The best thing you can do is take them down and place them in a location where they will get morning sun until the weather cools down. Moving other container plants to a shadier location will make your watering chores easier.

Many us have a houseplant or two growing on a sunny windowsill in the home or office. Don't neglect them during a heat wave.

To help your houseplants survive a heat wave, move them a few feet back from windows to prevent leaf scorch, as intense direct summer sunlight through glass can burn them. Water deeply in the early morning or evening, and pause any fertilizing or repotting, as this adds stress.Keep your plants comfortable and prevent irreversible damage with these targeted care steps:

Adjust Watering: Soil moisture evaporates much faster in high heat. Check your soil daily and water thoroughly only when the top inch is dry. Be careful not to overcompensate by flooding them, which can lead to root rot.Filter Light: Some plants love sunny windowsills, but the extreme rays of a heat wave can scorch leaves and cause bleaching. Move sun-sensitive species or use sheer curtains to diffuse the harsh rays.Boost Humidity: Indoor air gets incredibly dry during hot spells. Group your plants together, place pots on a pebble tray filled with water, or run a humidifier to create a cool, humid microclimate.

Manage the Temperature: Close your curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day to keep outside heat from radiating through your windows. Keep houseplants out of the direct path of air conditioning vents, as the sudden cold drafts will shock them.

Temporarily Pause Fertilizer & Pruning: Do not feed your plants during an extreme heat wave, as stressed plants cannot process nutrients well. Additionally, do not panic-prune drooping foliage; temporary wilting is a natural defense mechanism, and the plant will likely perk up once the temperature drops.

Whether your home has low light, indirect light, or a high light situation, we have a great selection of plants in all shapes and sizes with something for everyone including the young gardeners in your family. Plants are a great way to teach youngsters about mother nature and her wonders. We work really hard to keep new and interesting plants coming in on a regular basis, if you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask one our staff and we will do our best to locate it for you.
