Fishing Report Update: Caddis!!

Caddis are active across the region, from the San Miguel to the Gunnison, and trout are keying in on both adults and subsurface stages. Dry fly opportunities have been showing up throughout the day, but nymphing continues to be the most consistent producer.

The salmonfly hatch came and went quickly this year, but fishing remains excellent. PMDs and Yellow Sallies are now showing throughout the Gunnison, with fish looking for PMDs from the top of the Gorge all the way downriver. It’s definitely an early start for the PMD hatch this season, and we’d expect that trend to continue on the Lower Gunnison as well.

If you’re heading out, make sure you have caddis, PMDs, and Sallies in the box.

Runoff is done.

An early, below-average runoff this year means the fishing is ahead of schedule, and just about every resource is fishing well right now. Rivers are clear, the high country is open, and trout are feeding hard.

Cool spring temperatures combined with excellent water clarity have created a short but special post-runoff window. The best part? Runoff never really became an issue this season. We’ve been able to fish right through it, and conditions continue to improve by the day.

If you’ve been waiting for the green light, this is it.
