This week our perennial spotlight is shining on Dianthus! This reliably deer-resistant flower has quite the history.

Dianthus has been admired for centuries, with a history reaching all the way back to ancient Greece. The Greek botanist and philosopher Theophrastus wrote about a flower with a name resembling dios anthos, combining words associated with Zeus or the divine and anthos, meaning “flower.” This is how dianthus earned its lasting nickname, the “flower of the gods.”

✨ One old legend tells of the goddess Diana and a shepherd whose eyes were transformed into red carnations, although the dramatic tale is best regarded as later flower folklore rather than firmly documented ancient mythology.

✨Shakespeare later mentioned carnations, or “gillyflowers,” in The Winter’s Tale during a surprisingly modern conversation about gardeners crossing plants and improving upon nature.

✨Much later, the flower became associated with Mother’s Day when Anna Jarvis sent 500 white carnations to its first formal church observance in 1908.

✨Dianthus even became a symbol of peace and freedom during Portugal’s 1974 Carnation Revolution, when flowers were placed inside soldiers’ r***e barrels.

Beyond their fascinating history, dianthus plants are loved for their cheerful color, long-lasting blooms and beautifully fringed petals. They are wonderful additions to sunny borders, rock gardens, containers and cottage-style flower beds. Many varieties are hardy perennials that return year after year, and their nectar-rich flowers help attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.
