Some pianos do more than make music: they preserve history. 🎹

Yamaha recently completed a two-year conservation project for an early grand piano manufactured by Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd., the predecessor of Yamaha, around 1903.

Designated as a Minato City Cultural Property, this remarkable instrument features black urushi lacquer, gold maki-e decorations, and craftsmanship that reflects Japan’s early journey into piano manufacturing. Yamaha collaborated with conservation specialists from Tokyo University of the Arts to carefully stabilize the piano while preserving as much of its original material: and the marks of its 120-year journey: as possible.

Rather than restoring it for playability, the team preserved the piano as a cultural artifact, allowing future generations to study and appreciate its artistry, materials, and place in Japan’s industrial history.

Now on display at the Minato City Local History Museum in Tokyo, this grand piano stands as a beautiful reminder that true craftsmanship can outlast generations: and that preserving the past helps inspire the future.
