In 1882 the Norfolk and Western came through and this place went from around seven hundred people to five thousand inside of two years. That is why they called it the Magic City before they ever called it the Star City. The old N&W passenger station is still standing and it houses the O. Winston Link Museum now. Every bit of the street grid downtown traces back to that railroad.

Before it was the Star City it was Big Lick, and that name came from the ground itself. Salt licks here drew game, game drew people, and people stayed. The name is still used around town, usually with a grin. The literal salt in the dirt is why any of this is here at all.

The Historic City Market has been running since 1882, the oldest continuously operating open-air market in Virginia, open every day of the year except Christmas and New Year's. Friday and Saturday mornings are the ones locals actually plan around. If you have not been down there on a Saturday, that is the one to catch.

Hotel Roanoke went up in 1882, the same year the railroad turned this place from about seven hundred people into five thousand in two years flat. Tudor-style, built by the railroad, still standing, still the same address it has always had. The whole Star City story basically starts at that building.

Carvins Cove is the second-largest municipal park in the entire country, about twelve thousand acres and more than sixty miles of trail, and it sits right at the edge of the city. Locals just call it the Cove. Late summer mornings out there are still some of the best trail time of the year before it gets crowded for foliage season.

Roanoke is not a campus town the way Lexington or Harrisonburg are, but Hollins University sits right inside city limits, and Virginia Tech is close enough down the road that the whole Valley feels it on a Saturday. Two different kinds of college energy, same region, same time of year.

Two weeks out: the Hokies open at home September 5 against VMI. Blacksburg is forty minutes down the road, close enough that Roanoke feels every home Saturday. The Valley empties out in one direction in the morning and refills at night. Fall around here really starts with that first home game, not with the calendar.
