Yesterday, we laid my Soul Sister’s mama, Maureen, to rest. Let me tell you a little bit about her.
Before I started Whiskey and Wing-It, I spent a lot of time with Maureen—cooking, cleaning, running errands, and just sharing life. During those quiet moments, I got to hear so many of her stories. She told me about her past, her family, how things used to be, and most importantly, her faith. Let me tell you, this woman had a faith like no other.
Because of that connection, I had the honor of putting together her casket spray for yesterday’s service. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous on Monday when I went into town on my flower hunt. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, I thought, “Oh man, all I’m going to find is red, white, and blue, or bright summer mixes with oranges and yellows.” Those would have been beautiful, of course, but Maureen absolutely LOVED purple.
Costco was my first and only stop. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I walked in: PURPLE. So much purple! I immediately messaged her daughter, Melissa, and said, “Girl, your mama sent the flower gods!”
As we finally laid her to rest yesterday, I felt something I didn’t quite expect. While Maureen’s physical presence will be so deeply missed by her family and friends, I can honestly say I have never felt so happy and at peace during a funeral service.
You see, Maureen truly looked forward to this day. She talked about it a lot. She genuinely couldn’t wait for the moment she got to meet Jesus. Yesterday, every single fiber of my being felt that joy for her. No more pain, no more loneliness, and no more feeling like her best days were behind her.
Cheers to you, sweet Maureen, and thank you for sharing so much of your beautiful life with me.
