This is my favorite find of late.
It's a brass lamp lighter from the 1880's. Manufacturered by the Houchin Company of New York City.

A round wax coated wick ran through the tube on the side. The oval hole fit the handles of valves on some gas lights.

There is one of these tools in the Senate Museum in Washington.
They were used to light the gas chandeliers in the capital building.
