All professional or skilled-trade services come with a fee. Whether you are consulting a doctor or lawyer or calling a handyman or appliance repair service, you will be paying for their knowledge. We know, it is called a labor charge, but in reality it is a knowledge charge.

A joke that demonstrate this concept is: The appliance repair man shows up, hits it with a hammer, and charges $250.00. Why so much you ask? He answers, "$50 for hitting it with a hammer and $200 for knowing where to hit it!" OK, not so humorous if you are the one who is dealing with a washer full of wet clothes and water when it quits spinning, or a dishwasher that is spraying water all over your kitchen.

Appliance repairs may appear to be simple, but the fact is, they often are not. Appliance repair technicians have to stay current with every brand and model of each appliance. Several times a year, he may be required to travel out of town to attend training seminars on new products and service information. In addition, appliance repair technicians pay for liability insurance, vehicle maintenance, tools and equipment, office supplies and other business related expenses including, but not limited to advertising, which is probably the biggest expense for an appliance repair company.

The reason parts seem to be more expensive today is because appliances have many more electronic parts and circuit boards than in the past. These parts are more expensive than mechanical parts from "the good ol days". The appliance repair man cannot possibly stock every part and they cannot diagnose the problem and purchase the part based on the customers description. If they do take a chance and order the part, they may not be able to send it back if it is wrong. Or, they might have to pay a restocking fee or absorb the cost of shipping the part back to the dealer/manufacturer.

So, now you understand a little about why things are so expensive and why it can take several days or even a couple weeks to have your appliance repaired. Is it worth all that, or should you replace the appliance? Consumer Reports suggests replacing the appliance if the repair cost is more than half the price of a new one. But, how do you know how much the repair cost will be before the appliance repair man gets into the job?

A good appliance repairman will be able to give you an estimate once he diagnoses the problem. If you decide not to go through with the repairs, or you feel that, already knowing what the problem is, you are able to repair it yourself at lesser cost (which is most probably the case if the problem is simple and you are a decent handyman), you will be charged a service call fee because there is time, labor and most importantly knowledge involved in troubleshooting appliance problems.

When a customer says that only took 15 minutes
Yes, it did. But it took 50 years of experience to do it in 15 minutes. Your paying for the skill not the time.

An older customer I know called a large appliance company in the area they charged her $600 to change a water valve on a refrigerator. And the worst part was she had a sign a contract to agree to that price. I would have charged $79.95 plus the part.

These companies have HUGE overhead. Always go with the smaller companies. We have overhead but it's not like that and why would you want to pay for that?

Our service call is currently $79.95 - $99.95 - $129.95 for most major appliances with easy access, includes labor and trip.Parts and tax are extra.

I work mostly on OLDER washers, dryers, stoves and dishwashers. Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, Estate, Frigidaire, gas or electric, NO Samsung or LG.
I do some electronic ones depending on brand and model. If I don't I still have someone for you.

I also do dryer vent cleaning $79.95 and microwave installs $149.95 and garbage disposal installs $99.95. Plus tax.

Ok today I had a call that the washer wasn't draining and was humming and had no lights on.

I removed the pump and found a hair tie and some white plastic pieces and then noticed more pieces in the tub along with some coins.

I had to remove the basket and found a bunch of coins in the basket and even more in the tub along with lots of white plastic broken pieces.

I couldn't figure out what they were until I looked at the bottom of the tub and noticed all the vanes were broken off the bottom of the basket because of the coins whacking them probably because the customer used the Eco cycle which didn't put a lot of water in the machine which made the coins move even more violently against the bottom of the basket and rip all the vanes out of it.

So in conclusion I would definitely recommend you definitely check your pockets and do not leave any foreign objects in them especially coins as they will destroy the basket and any other for an objects can or will go into the pump and jam it up.

This past Saturday I went to home Depot in Penfield and directly over to Burger King for lunch and I was sitting in my truck eating lunch and was getting ready to go and my truck wouldn't start..

I thought it was my battery so I called my fiance to bring me a jumper box which she did and it didn't fix it..

There was an advanced auto right next to me so I walked over there and spoke to a gentleman named Bert and he was very willing to come out and help me diagnose what was going on.. he had said my battery didn't look good but when he put the jumper box on the truck started.. so I drove over in front of his store with my truck running and then shut it off and he put a new battery in it. I went to start it, same thing.. I thought well I guess it wasn't the battery must be the starter.. so I had him sell me a new starter and I was going to have to put it in there in the driveway and he said I had till 9:00 or I could keep the truck there all night if necessary..

So I rolled up my sleeves and got under the truck and I hear a voice and it said what are you doing? I said, well I guess I get putting a starter in.. he said to me I work for Ford I do it all day long do you want me to help you?
I thought who is this person? An angel... He didn't quite look like an angel that I thought an angel would look like he had work clothes on a ponytail rough hands but an angel he was!!!!

This gentleman climbed down under my truck and I felt like I was a nurse handing a doctor instruments as he would ask me for each tool and eventually got my starter done and in the middle of it told me. "Don't worry I'm not going to leave you stranded"

I found out his name was Eric and I thought I recognized him from Debbies Supply and now he was working at Van Bortel Ford also.

I was in such a mess, all I could think about is having the truck towed, having it sit at the mechanics for so many days not being able to do any of my appointments not making any money wasn't a good situation.

This gentleman had no idea of my situation he jumped right in and saved the day..

I went to Eric's employment and compensated him with a generous gift card and 4 $5 lottery tickets and told him that I hope he was as lucky with those tickets as I was in meeting him.

Oh and do you know angels can swear? LOL
I guess being an angel doesn't relieve you you of the stress of working on dirty tuff stuff for people you don't know... LOL

I believe in paying it forward and now you should also, because you never know when you're going to need an angel or when they're going to appear...:)

I would just like to say that if you schedule an appointment with my company or any company especially during this coronavirus epidemic and you choose to cancel the appointment for whatever reason.

We all would appreciate if you would contact us the morning of the appointment that was scheduled and cancel it then before we take our time to drive out to your home to find another company in your driveway. This is not fair to us as we are risking our health to come to your house to help you with your Appliance issues.

Yes, we are an essential business and take all the precautions that we need to protect ourselves and you.

But we schedule our times between 10 and 1 + 2 and 5 please be respectful and cancel in the morning if something changes. We would appreciate that. Thank you.

I would like to clarify something about my pricing structure in the appliance repair industry.

For appliance repairs I charge $79.95 or $99.95 or$129.95 (depending on the job) plus parts and tax and that includes the trip charge to your home, the diagnosis and repair.

If I cannot repair your Appliance the fee is the same because it still costs me to come to your home and diagnose your machine. I have vehicle and many hidden business expenses.

Other companies will charge you a service call to come out to your house and then they will charge you a diagnostics fee and then they will charge you a labor fee and that can add up to who-knows-what?

I understand why everyone asks ,"How much is this going to cost me?" With my company you don't need to ask you already know.

The parts of course are what they are? And there is no upcharge on those parts. So I don't make it back by selling you expensive parts.

I know that appliance companies to get a bad rap because of the things that they've done in the past and still do.

I have never done that. I have been in this business for 50 years and have always charged a flat rate fee.

So I just wanted to clarify that issue so that you have a better understanding. And you will know what the fees are going to be if there are no parts involved and or if I have to condemn the appliance the cost is the same to come out. There is no fine print. This is how I do business. :)
