The American Astronomical Society (AAS) says modern eclipse glasses do not expire. If the glasses were compliant with the ISO 12312-2, and have no punctures, scratches or tears, and the filters/lenses remain attached to the frames, they will last.

Older eclipse glasses used materials that degraded over time, so they were often printed with a 3-year expiration period. That is no longer true. However one manufacturer, American Paper Optics, still prints the 3-year expiration warning out of an abundance of caution.

Given this, you can keep your solar glasses for the next partial eclipse in North America! This is on March 29, 2025 and if you live in one the states below, hold onto your glasses!

Connecticut
Delaware
DC
Maine
Maryland

Did you know that the Moon is slowly moving away from the Earth? The Moon is drifting about 1.5 inches farther from the Earth every year!

In about 600 million years, our Moon will be too far from the Sun that it will no longer completely cover the Sun with the frequency is does now, leaving us with just partial eclipses.

Who knew it was just a lucky break that the Moon and Sun fit so perfectly in our sky, in our lifetime? We recommend soaking up this cosmic coincidence while you can. We live in a special place and time.

That’s ok! Outside of the path of totality, viewers within the 48 contiguous states and many other areas will see a partial solar eclipse.

For those who experience a partial solar eclipse, the sky will appear slightly darker than it was before the eclipse, depending on how much the Moon blocks the Sun in your location. A partial solar eclipse is still an amazing experience and something you’ll want to witness!

The invention of the telescope played an important role in advancing our understanding of Earth's place in the cosmos. The first telescopes were created in the Netherlands in 1608. Spectacle makers Hans Lippershey & Zacharias Janssen and Jacob Metius, independently created telescopes.

Early telescopes were primarily used for making Earth-bound observations, such as surveying and military tactics. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was part of a small group of astronomers who turned telescopes towards the heavens. After hearing about the "Danish perspective glass" in 1609, Galileo constructed his own telescope.

After his initial success, Galileo focused on refining the instrument. Refining led to increased magnification of heavenly objects which had a significant and immediate impact. These new observations were by no means exclusive to Galileo. The story of Galileo and the telescope is a powerful example of the key role that technologies play in enabling advances in scientific knowledge. With that said, the telescope isn't the only technology at play in this story. Galileo also used the printed book and the design of prints in his books to present his research to the community.

This is not a story of a lone person theorizing and piecing together a new model of the cosmos. Quite the contrary, an array of individuals in the early 17th century took the newly created telescopes and pointed them toward the heavens. Unlike those other observers, however, Galileo rapidly published his findings. Galileo understood the significance and importance of these observations more readily than his contemporaries. It was his understanding, and his foresight to publish, that made Galileo's ideas stand the test of time.
