In a video last night, one of Rockford's aldermen offered a caution as he welcomed a new small business to his ward: "If you don't support local businesses, they're not going to last."

In local news coverage this morning, a sobering reminder of that reality surfaced.

We learned that two Rockford businesses won't last: an independent local restaurant is closing after 13 years (Lucha Cantina) and the locally owned location of a national brand is closing after its first year (Rusty Taco).

While many factors influence whether a business survives, local patronage is one of the most critical at a time of rising operational and supply costs. In this economy, if local businesses are going to last, they need more than customers:

They need regulars — many regulars who live here. Unlike Chicago, where restaurants and retail districts have heavy support from travelers, tourists and day-trippers, Rockford does not yet have that level of a cushion. Here, the success of local businesses depends primarily on the spending habits of local residents.

Shop Local, Rockford exists to turn awareness into action and informed residents into regulars.

Follow and share our weekly tips to discover local retailers and products hiding in plain sight across the city.

Because small shifts in spending can have a big impact. And together, we can help the businesses that define Rockford stay open, grow, and thrive.
