We've seen plenty of fallen trees in our rivers over the years. But the size of the root system on this one on the Kish today made me stop and take a pic. Do not under estimate the power of moving water. Would have loved to be on site when this fell. Probably for the best I was not there! :)

Gear Up and Head Out during our Summer Getaway Sale. Shorts, jackets, pants, sun shirts, camping and hiking gear and hiking shoes. A lot of this carries over into fall so plenty of time to put it to use!

It had been about a year since we last paddled the Sugar River. Our previous attempt in August was rained out. Flow was low, but that does not mean you do not have to pay attention as low water can present obstacles you do not see at higher flow rates. For example, sometimes the water depth made us have to paddle by the deadfall.

A full house of 11 joined us for what has become an annual Labor Day adventure. Half the trip was paddlers over 70! Keep moving people. Plenty of adventure awaits later in life. All of them kicked butt and took names!

Thank you to all that came out. A couple weeks of no public trips then we start up with our fall paddles on the Kish Sept 26. Although it may be more summer than fall still!

Another story of the 50 Voices of the Wilderness series by Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. I love hearing how the area affects each person in their own way. One of these days.......

Miguel Garcia-Gosalvez grew up in Alicante, Spain — warm rock and scrubby hills, closer to Arizona than anything you'd call lake country. He hiked the mountains as a boy, often alone. But he never sat in a canoe until his forties, and didn't find the Boundary Waters until later still.

Then after his first trip with a friend, he planned his own trip…alone. He's been going back solo ever since.

We interviewed Miguel on our latest Big Red Canoe podcast. Solitude is a hard thing to explain. "The lakes remain steady. The mind does not," he muses. "But it was the most alive I had felt in many years."

Out there, life compresses to a handful of essentials: clean water, enough calories, dry shelter, sound judgment. After a few days, he stops missing everything else. In the quiet, he feels close to his late parents. And when he comes home, he's changed. "I appreciate my family more — my kids, my wife. I listen more. I'm more present. I'm a better person for a while. That's why I need to keep going back."

Looking ahead 50 years, Miguel's hope is simple: that the Boundary Waters stays exactly as it is. Coming from a continent with little true wilderness left, he doesn't take that for granted. "Just knowing that place exists, exactly as it is, is worth protecting," he says. "Once you alter the water, you lose everything." He shakes his head at the idea that there's any safe way to mine next to it. "It has a special place in my heart. Whatever we can do to protect it — it's not enough."

In our 50 Voices of the Wilderness series, we'll meet someone whose life was shaped by the Boundary Waters and who, in turn, is shaping the future of this wilderness.

Couple spots left for our Sugar River paddle next Sunday. With no intent at all, this has become an annual Labor Day weekend paddle. Same with the Kish for Memorial Day. No intent to do so, but after a few years in a row why not make it a tradition!

For more info on this paddling adventure or to register please visit https://bit.ly/2XXoOM0. This is not a beginner experience. Due to changing current, no matter the level, and obstacles, ie, trees, some kayak control experience is required. Nothing major. But you need to be able to steer your kayak thru openings while navigating current.
