The Atlantic Shore: Human and Natural History from Long Island to Labrador by John Hay and Peter Farb. Harper & Row, New York, 1966. First edition hardcover in dust jacket.

A regional natural-and-human history of the North Atlantic coastline, tracing its geology, tides, marine life, and shore communities from the Gaspé Peninsula down through Maine, Cape Cod, and Long Island. Written by two noted American nature writers, with beautiful illustrations throughout by Edward and Marcia Norman.

I find the vintage nature books from the 1960s with their pencil drawings so appealing! This one is in very good condition. Unmarked except prior owner’s name. Dust jacket now in a Mylar protective cover. More photos are available.

With Reckless Abandon: Memoirs of a Boat-Obsessed Life by Capt. Jim Sharp. 2007, Devereux Books (Marblehead, MA), First Edition trade paperback. Signed & Inscribed by the author on the title page. (Included postcard from Artisan Boatworks in Rockport that was in this copy.)

Memoir of Jim Sharp, longtime captain of the Maine windjammer schooner Adventure (now a National Historic Landmark in Gloucester, MA). Sharp recounts overcoming childhood polio, decades running charter schooners on the Maine coast, sailing the Arctic schooner Bowdoin, and even opening an unusual restaurant. Told in his own wonderful storytelling voice.

I missed this one in my post this morning.
Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring The World After September 11, by Thomas L. Friedman, foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times and winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize For Commentary.

This book was published in 2002, aggregating Friedman’s NYT columns related to 9/11. Friedman said the book “is not meant to be a comprehensive study of September 11 and all the factors that went into it. Rather, my hope is that it will constitute a ‘word album’ that captures and preserves the raw, unpolished emotional and analytical responses that illustrate how I, and others, felt as we tried to grapple with September 11 and its aftermath.”

Currently reading this older goodie (2003) - The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. A bizarro alternate 1980s England with time travel and tons of literary references, and a smart FMC named Thursday Next. It’s a fun, clever and ironic read, a bit like the Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Official summary:
Welcome to a surreal version of Great Britain, circa 1985, where time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very seriously, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem, militant Baconians heckle performances of Hamlet, and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection, until someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature. When Jane Eyre is plucked from the pages of Bronte’s novel, Thursday must track down the villain and enter the novel herself to avert a heinous act of literary homicide.

For “modern” collectible books (roughly 1920-present), dust jackets are a very important factor in their value. The bold and beautiful jacket designs are often the primary visual appeal, and they are the first part of a book to get lost or damaged, making intact dust jackets highly desirable.

As soon as possible after acquiring modern collectible books, I protect the dust jackets with special archival covers. These covers help to preserve the jacket in the best possible condition. The covers fold and tuck - no tape or adhesive- and are made from Mylar film which doesn’t react with the paper, dyes, or inks used in the jacket or the book. They make it easier to safely handle and display the book by protecting the jacket from oils, dirt, dust, rubbing, and tearing.

Next time you see a book in the shop with a clear jacket cover, you’ll know why!
