Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. What began in Texas as a celebration of freedom, resilience, and community has grown into a day of reflection and remembrance across the nation.
