🐾 Happy National Dog Day from The Opry House @ Walnut Grove! 🐾

There’s just something special about a good dog. ❤️

They ride shotgun on back roads, supervise every project, follow us from room to room, and somehow know exactly when we need a little extra company. And let’s be honest — they’ve never met a trip they didn’t think they were invited on. 😂

Dogs have been part of American homes, farms, front porches, and family life for generations. From hardworking farm dogs to spoiled couch companions, they have a way of becoming part of our stories.

So today, we want to see YOUR dogs! 🐶

Drop a picture in the comments and tell us their name. Bonus points for a photo with a little vintage flair — riding in an old truck, stretched out on Grandma’s quilt, guarding the garden, or just being their wonderfully spoiled selves.

Happy National Dog Day to all the four-legged members of the family! 🐾❤️

FROM THE VINTAGE RECIPE BOX 🌽
Old-Fashioned Southern Corn Pudding

Some recipes don't need to be fancy. They just need butter, fresh ingredients, and a casserole dish that's been to more family dinners than you can count. ❤️

This week's recipe is Old-Fashioned Southern Corn Pudding—soft and custardy on the inside, lightly golden on top, and just a little sweet. It's one of those old Southern side dishes that feels equally at home at Sunday supper, a church potluck, or Grandma's kitchen table.

And August is the perfect time to make it while fresh corn is still plentiful!

🌽 OLD-FASHIONED SOUTHERN CORN PUDDING

Ingredients:
4 cups fresh corn kernels (about 6 ears)
3 large eggs
1 cup whole milk
½ cup heavy cream
3 Tbsp. butter, melted
2 Tbsp. granulated sugar
2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. black pepper
¼ tsp. nutmeg

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F and butter a 2-quart baking dish.

Whisk together the eggs, milk, cream and melted butter. Add sugar, flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg and whisk until combined.

Stir in the fresh corn and pour everything into your prepared baking dish.

Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the center is just set and the top is lightly golden. Let it rest about 10 minutes before serving.

That's it. No cans of creamed corn. No box of corn muffin mix. Just a simple, old-fashioned corn pudding made from scratch.

Did your family make corn pudding—or did you call it something else? We love hearing about those recipes that have been passed down through the generations.

Come take a walk down memory lane at The Opry House @ Walnut Grove. You might even find the perfect vintage casserole dish for your next Sunday supper!

🫙 Fun Fact Friday — Canning Season!

Did you know home canning became especially popular in America during the late 1800s and early 1900s as families looked for reliable ways to preserve their summer harvest for the colder months ahead?

By late summer, kitchens were busy! Tomatoes, peaches, green beans, pickles, jams and preserves were put away to enjoy long after the garden stopped producing. Those familiar glass canning jars weren’t just pretty, they played an important role in feeding families throughout the year.

Today, vintage Ball, Mason and other old canning jars have found a whole new purpose. Collectors use them for flowers, kitchen décor, storage…and sometimes just because that old blue-green glass is too pretty to pass up! 💙

🍅 Stop by The Opry House and browse our vintage jars, kitchenware, crocks and farmhouse treasures. You never know what piece of the past you’ll find!

FROM THE VINTAGE RECIPE BOX 🍑
Old-Fashioned Peach Bread

There’s something about August that calls for fresh peaches. And when you’ve eaten all you can standing over the kitchen sink with peach juice running down your hand, it’s time to bake something. 😂

This week, we’re pulling Old-Fashioned Peach Bread from the Vintage Recipe Box. It’s moist, lightly spiced, full of fresh peaches, and just the kind of simple recipe that would have been tucked inside Grandma’s recipe box.

OLD-FASHIONED PEACH BREAD

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
½ cup butter, softened
¾ cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
½ cup sour cream
1½ cups peeled & diced fresh peaches
½ cup chopped pecans, optional

For the top:
1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
½ tsp. cinnamon

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.

In another bowl, cream butter with both sugars. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and sour cream. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients just until combined.

Gently fold in the peaches and pecans. Pour into your prepared loaf pan and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Bake 55–65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan about 15 minutes before turning it out to finish cooling.

And yes... cutting yourself a warm slice and adding a little butter is highly encouraged. ❤️

Have an old family recipe tucked away somewhere? Tell us what was always in your mama or grandma’s recipe box!

And while you're feeling nostalgic, stop by The Opry House @ Walnut Grove and see what treasures might bring back a few memories of your own.
