In January 1971, my grandfather, Ivan (whom I never met but was named after), was featured in an Outdoor Life article about crow hunting. He was an avid crow and waterfowl hunter, and I’m sure that was probably the pinnacle in his hunting memories.

Fast forward to today, I received my copy of the latest Callmakers & Collectors Association of America magazine, where Rob Protzman with Rob Protzman wrote an article on me. That article proceeded another article (also written by Rob) about the 50th anniversary of Rich N Tone and the callmakers build-off. I, alongside 7 other friends & fellow callmakers, were also featured in that article.

It’s wild to me that 55.5 years later, I’d be fortunate enough to have that same feeling my grandfather must have felt so many years ago; seeing his name in writing alongside a picture, and wondering what he did so right that earned him a spot in a page in a magazine that would be read by fellow hunters that enjoyed the same passion he did.

Never in a millions years would I have thought I’d end up being featured in the Callmakers & Collectors Association of America magazine…a true honor.

A family member of mine, Mick Lacy (1964 World Duck Calling Champion & owner of Big River Game Calls) helped found this organization with 31 other individuals on September 11th, 1987. He knew I had gotten into call making in 2020, and we had chatted a few times about it all. We lost him in 2024. He would’ve gotten a kick out of this
