Growing older has always carried such negative connotations.People talk about ageing as though it means no more fun, no more adventure, no more excitement — just aches, pains, illness and the slow winding down of life.
Growing up, old age was often portrayed as the end of the road rather than the beginning of a new chapter.
I even noticed it when searching for images for this post. Pictures of older people are so often sad and lonely — sitting quietly by themselves, looking tired or forgotten. Meanwhile younger people are shown dancing, laughing, wearing bright colours and looking full of life. Even in art and media, ageing is so often portrayed as something bleak and joyless.
But why have we accepted this as reality when it simply isn’t true?
I’m only months away from turning 60 and honestly, I don’t feel old. In many ways I feel ageless. I certainly don’t feel as though life is over or that there’s nothing left ahead of me.
There is still so much I want to do, so much I want to experience, learn and enjoy.
It’s time we changed the perspective on ageing — not as something leading us towards the grave, but as an exciting new direction. There is still so much life to live and so much ahead to look forward to.
