Stacie Hanna, Certified Nurse Midwife, shares her inspiration behind "The Bestie Bag Project" for girls in the Roseburg School District.

"The “Bestie Bag” project started two years ago, when my oldest daughter was in 5th grade. She came home from learning about Human Growth and Development (ie puberty and menstruation) at school with a small bag that had a couple of pads and deodorant in it. I did some investigating and found that the teachers had made these bags themselves, but that most schools actually didn’t distribute any bags at all. As I’m sure you can imagine, there just isn’t additional funding for something like this.

So, last year, I reached out to my friend, Megan Crouch. She is a middle school teacher and also owns a homemade cosmetic bag company, Needle and Oak. I told her about my hope to be able to provide a bag of sorts to local girls during their Human Growth and Development lessons, but that I want them to be cute and fun! I wanted young girls to feel empowered in their changing bodies and not be afraid or embarrassed of them. Then, COVID-19 hit and schools closed, halting this project.

While I didn’t know what the school year of 2021 would look like, I was determined to see this project come to life! Dr Mary Powell, Director of Women’s Health at Evergreen and Kim Tyree, COO of Evergreen Family Medicine and Women’s Health, believed in my vision and we went for it! Megan helped me make 200 bags, enough for every 5th grade girl in the Roseburg school district! Next year, and each year after, we will be supplying bags for every 5th grade girl in Douglas County!

Evergreen Women’s Health recognizes that puberty can be a very confusing and exciting time in a young girls life. We hope that the “Bestie Bag” will help to provide some ease by having a cute place to store pads, tampons, hair ties, deodorant and more! Like your best friend, you’re gonna want this bag by your side! “Bestie Bag”!

Flowers are blooming, the grass is green and spring is in the air! I’ve been working all winter long, and am happy to announce that is returning to this Saturday, April 3! I have lots of bags, masks, and goodies in fun new prints. See ya there!

This week 7/25, I am fully restocked on breathable masks for farmers market. I have National Parks, Smokey the Bear, sunflowers, bees, dachshunds, cats, camo and more. I have lots of child and adult sizes. See you tomorrow!

I just finished this batch of masks for Farmers’ Market tomorrow on the 4th of July. Somewhere in this pile is the 2,000th mask that I have made since March 23rd. My head is spinning over that number and I have a thumb cramp, but it has been worth it 🤣.
