I received a 1938pre-WWII 14kt gold watch dunhill Rollalite in pieces from a client about 6 months ago. There are only 3 or 4 still known to still exist. It’s 2 piece axle was broken and missing all but the piece on top which held the striker wheel. The dunhill repair service had already tried to repair it but could only disassemble it and did not have any repair parts for the lighter. They returned most of the pieces back to The owner. The Rollalites made in 1938 and 1939 are rare and of course the gold ones with watches in the lid are extremely rare. When WWII was over dunhill had changed the design to what we all know as Rollalites that eventually became the Rollagas. The main difference between the prewar and post war Rollalites is the flint platform is not removable so the axle must be able to fit down the shaft of the platform. I had my doubts that it could be restored without altering the original lighter.. my friend Jim Paul used his contacts in Austin Texas to meet Keith Bright owner of Bright Fire Ci**rs in Liberty Hills TX. Keith is a retired IBM engineer who is also a master machinist who loves a challenge such as this. After meeting with him and talking over the engineering requirements that the replacement axle must perform he accepted the challenge. By the way the lighter also had a broken flint housing as well as missing the hinge pin. While Keith was starting the axle work I sent the watch which was dirty and not running to Bruno Park at Vintage Watch Restoration in Phoenix AZ for cleaning and service. He had the watch back to me in a few weeks running and keeping time. Keith was able to take an original post war Rollalite flint housing and bore the holes to that of the original. He used the flint housing torsion spring from the donor lighter as well. Keith far exceeded my expectations and despite death and illness in his immediate family was able to finish the lighter. The lighter now lights every time and keeps good time! I was happy and relieved when it’s owner received the lighter in the mail today!

I am proud to announce a major upgrade to my dunhill Rollagas service kits. All my kits now include the often missing #31 flame control springs. The spring helps maintain a consistent flame height between uses. They are tiny and often are missing from the lighter because someone removed the gas control valve at some point and it fell out. It has frustrated many a Rollagas owner who bought an o-ring kit only to discover their lighter is missing this spring. With the high cost of international shipping buying a single spring would double the cost of their repair. My springs are stainless steel and fit perfectly on the base of the needle valve. Most of the my competitors springs do not. My prices have increased some but less than half of what the retail price of the springs are... so there is no cheaper way to get top quality springs along with the best dunhill service kit available. The 2 lighter kit has one #31 spring, the 5 lighter has 2 and the 12 lighter has 3.

That Services 2 dunhill rollagases (pre-2005 models). The dunhill lighter schematics show 2 spacers on the needle valve shaft while most rollagases are found to only have one. Enough o-rings & filter pads & silicone grease to service 2 lighters.

Flame adjustment:
On the Vintage Rollagas you have the flame control dial on the side of the lighter for fine control. If a proper flame height of just over an inch cannot be achieved easily then Coarse gas control can be controlled by turning the gas control valve on the bottom of the lighter. Using a 2.5mm slotted screwdriver, turn the small keyhole shaped slotted valve clockwise (to right) a little at a time to decrease gas flow and lower flame height. Turn counter clockwise (to left) to increase gas flow and flame height.
To properly set your flame height...
1. Turn flame control dial on side of lighter clockwise to maximum flame height.
2. Turn gas control valve on bottom clockwise until you initially meet a little resistance (gets harder to turn)..but not too tight!
3. Open lid and feel the amount of gas flow by letting it touch your cheek.. Do not light the lighter yet!
4. Adjust the flow with the screw driver until the flow is equal to a flame height of about 3 inches.
5. Use the flame control dial on the side to lower the flame height to the approximate height equal to the top of the open lid.

This is my Dunhill Giant butane Unique lighter with the Rollagas valve system which makes it easy to service. It is rare since this is only the third I have ever seen... The first on eBay. The petrol models made in the 1950's are much more common and less expensive.

The Dome Lid Rollagas was made for a few years beginning in 1976 until around 1982. It was made in these models all with coarse bark bodies: Gold plate with black, burgundy & wood grain yellow lacquer side panels. The silver model was only available with black lacquer. With the lid weighing 10 grams more than the standard Rollagas it feels substantial and commanding in your hand. These are duplicates in my collection and will be going up for sale soon.
