Matching the mouse hatch in East Texas with Cousin Neal this weekend. When we flipped the jon boat over, a field mouse came crawling out from underneath—instant reminder to tie on a mouse pattern. The banks were also crawling with giant grasshoppers, and hopper patterns ended up catching most of my fish. Sometimes the best hatch chart is just paying attention to what’s already there.

Micro fishing in an urban environment with a small tenkara rod and a caterpillar dry fly. When there has been significant rain in the Austin area, that is when you should try to fish some of our urban creeks for these little Green Sunfish.

The 🐛 is Hughie Graves’ Caterpillar Fly, I have a tutorial on YouTube and so does Hughie - his is better.

Micro fishing with a $20 Amazon rod on the Austin green belt - When it’s been raining in ATX, it’s always a great time to bring a small fishing pole and light weight tackle/flies with you on a hike to the green belt. This rod was fun to use but being limited to just a 12 ft cast is really only useful in very niche situations.

You never know what will happen when you fish Lady Bird Lake in Austin. I’ve seen hundreds of folks jump off the bridge but this was the first time I’ve seen anyone use a ski rope.
