This one may have to make a graduation slideshow….

When your kids grow up in a fly shop, “entertainment” looks a little different.

Australian possum pelts. Fox tails. Squirrel tails. Rabbit strips. Bunny masks. Bucktail. Chicken feathers. Basically, the kind of stash that would make a normal parent ask a LOT of questions.

So when the kids get into the Australian possum and decide it’s the perfect thing to play with…

Should I be worried or proud?!? 😂 🤦

Honestly, I’m leaning toward proud.

Especially because that Australian possum happens to be a pretty important ingredient in one of our MOST POPULAR flies: Johnson’s Rio Bandito.

Chris buys Australian possum in bulk and has it custom dyed “crawfish orange” specifically for tying the Rio Bandito. It’s one of those little behind-the-scenes details that makes a great fly even better.

And if you’ve never been to Living Waters Fly Fishing, consider this your invitation to make the trip.

We’re home to the largest fly tying selection in all of Texas, with rows and rows of high-quality fly tying materials. You may come in looking for one package of rabbit strips and leave wondering how you’re going to explain your feather addiction to your spouse.

Worth the trip. Worth the obsession. Worth crying happy tears in the fly-tying aisle because you get to actually feel the material before you buy.

Come see the stash for yourself - the custom-dyed Australian Possum has just been restocked!

The Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout is native to the high country of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Its future depends on healthy, connected streams and thoughtful conservation efforts to restore them to their historic waters.

Living Waters Fly Fishing annually hosts Rio Grande Cutthroat Conservation Trips to Trinchera Reserve and Lodge. As a Trout Unlimited Gold Level Business owner, Chris has had the privilege of participating in conservation and education efforts focused on this incredible native trout throughout its range. For him, the work goes far beyond catching fish. It’s about understanding the places they call home, protecting those environments, and helping ensure future generations have the opportunity to experience these fish in their native habitat.

As a shop, we owe our deepest thanks to Trinchera Fisheries Biologist Reece Samuelson, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife fisheries biologist Estevan Vigil for their ongoing partnership and ceaseless efforts to restore native trout streams throughout southern Colorado. The restoration work happening across the Rio’s native range, helps ensure that the species’ future is a bright one!

Several years ago, Chris helped produce a short film called Unspoken, documenting the pursuit and conservation of Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout.

🎬 Unspoken was created primarily to inspire others to take action on behalf of the species and protect the watersheds they depends on.

Conservation isn’t just about protecting fish.
It’s about protecting the rivers, landscapes, and wild places they call home.

If you’ve never experienced the Llano River, you’re missing one of the true gems of the Texas Hill Country. Flowing over iconic pink granite, winding through native shrubs, and holding healthy populations of Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass, sunfish, and Rio Grande cichlids, the Llano offers an unforgettable fly fishing experience.

Jim has been hard at work scouting the river and providing us with up-to-date fishing reports. Conditions are looking great, and this weekend is shaping up to be an excellent time to get on the water.

Looking for the best public access points, current fly recommendations, or gear suggestions?

Comment “LLANO” below, and we’ll send you a public access map/locations along with the recommendations for flies and tackle that’s producing fish right now.

Want to learn the river with an experienced guide? Book a trip with Jim Kettleman or one of our premium Texas Hill Country guides by booking online or calling the fly shop.
