🟢Jay-Z’s original rap mentor wasn’t Big Daddy Kane—it was Jaz-O, the man who gave him his first real studio exposure. In the late '80s, Jaz-O got Jay signed as his hypeman on EMI Records, not Def Jam. Jay's first-ever verse on wax was actually on Jaz-O’s 1989 track “Hawaiian Sophie.” Most heads know that, but what’s rarely mentioned: Jay-Z was never officially signed to EMI himself—he was just riding Jaz’s budget.

🟢Few know that Jaz-O was the first rapper to record at D&D Studios—not Gang Starr, not Big L. Jaz brought Jay-Z there years before Reasonable Doubt dropped. The same D&D Studio where Jay later returned, post-fallout, to record tracks like “You Must Love Me.” Irony runs deep.

🟢Jaz-O taught Jay the double-time flow, but the technique itself Jaz learned from a Kansas City rapper named KC Supreme. Jaz fused that Midwest bounce into his Brooklyn style and passed it down. Jay later refined it into the flows you hear on "N***a What, N***a Who" and “Jigga My N***a.”
