The original 1969 publication about a quasi-functional object that confounded and inspired artists for 50 years. In 1965, William T. Wiley found a strange step stool with a slanted step covered in green linoleum in a secondhand store and showed it to his student at UC Davis, Bruce Nauman. Fascinated by its unusual construction, the artists bought it for 50 cents and brought it back to Nauman’s studio. This mystifying object ignited a flurry of variations and exhibits among artists in the Bay Area, giving rise to the Funk Movement, further influencing artists like Robert Arneson, Ray Johnson, Stephen Kaltenbach, and Richard Serra. Put on your spooky season best and join us for a hauntingly special episode of The Stacks as we welcome in The Sugar Pushers. The Sugar Pushers

POOOOF!! A purple cloud of smoke and bats dissipates. Behold! The Sugar Pushers have crossed the veil! Taking corporeal form as Count Abel, Dr. Bog, Pooka, and The Muck, The Sugar Pushers have been haunting the streets and bars of Northern California for half a decade, playing all original haunted hymns that are equal parts caramel apple, eye of newt, hexed theremin, and a bag full of black cats. They rise from their graves as the fall winds blow to spook your socks off with their raucous refrains. Once the last leaf has fallen, they retreat to the netherworld and slumber until the following year.

Enjoy an exclusive, up-close 40-minute set surrounded by a curated selection of music & art books.

It’s Halloween month! Please share your excellent and creative costumes with us! We only ask that you keep extremely tall hats or headpieces at home for this outting since we will still be filming.

October in Sacramento is a magical time and The Stacks is celebrating with the multi-faceted performing artist, director, and professor of vocal music, Omari Tau. Omari Tau

For this performance, Omari Tau weaves together songs that are at once new and hauntingly familiar. Blending his love of soul, jazz, and even classical music, Tau tackles Nina Simone, Kurt Weill, and more. He is joined by cellist Natalie Hagwood, and pianist/composer Graham Sobelman as they reimagine tunes for Amatoria’s unique space.
