This is a tough one. What do you think?

😮‍💨Damn, it's really official. Marvel is leaving New York.

For ninety years, this city has been the undisputed heart of the Marvel Universe. Growing up here, there was this quiet, electric thrill in knowing that some of the greatest modern mythology in human history was being forged just a few subway stops away. New York was never just a convenient backdrop for these stories. New York was Marvel, and Marvel was New York.

That connection started at the very beginning. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby did not invent a fictional metropolis to house their heroes. They simply looked out the window of their office and drew the world they lived in, building the Fantastic Four in the very neighborhoods they came up in. That raw, authentic energy became a torch passed down through generations of legendary creators. It is why Denny O'Neil and Frank Miller could redefine Daredevil by turning the real, gritty blocks of Hell's Kitchen into a noir masterpiece. It is how Chris Claremont and John Byrne grounded the X-Men so deeply that a school for mutants in Westchester felt like a place you could find on a map, and why Gerry Conway, John Romita Sr., and Gil Kane were able to capture the absolute, beating soul of the city in the pages of Spider-Man.

Because of that creative lineage, the stories always felt like home. We grew up knowing that Ben Grimm was proudly running the pavement on Yancy Street, and we knew that if we walked down Bleecker Street, we could look up and try to spot the window of Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum. That local DNA is baked into the characters themselves. Peter Parker is a Queens kid who takes the train and gets depressed at Mets games, while Miles Morales carries the heartbeat of Brooklyn in his stride.

As a former New Yorker, I know we were spoiled. We walked the same concrete as our heroes and the giants who drew them. They say if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Marvel proved that to the world a long time ago, but as they pack up their offices, I find myself wishing they would still make it there.

Accepting this transition is incredibly tough. They say that life is all about change, but a New York based Marvel was one change I simply was not ready for. I do not mean to sound hyperbolic or dramatic. I am just genuinely sad for the next generation. I am sad for the kid who is going to grow up reading these legendary stories about New York, only to realize they are being written and drawn all the way over in Los Angeles.

Sure, the stories will keep going. The characters will still swing from the Chrysler Building on the page, but knowing the actual bullpen is no longer working within the city limits makes those fictional skylines ring just a little bit hollow. This art form means the world to me, and it is incredibly sad to watch Marvel pack up and leave its true home after nearly a century.

Thanks for the magic, Marvel. New York will always be home and Marvel, to me, will always be New York🗽

Do YOU have a NY Marvel HQ story?
