It's Day 6 of the 2026 Coy's Horror Challenge, where 31 days of horror could win you a spooky prize pack. Remember, you only need one entry to play.

Day 6's prompt is HEX APPEAL: witches, covens, and hexes.

Co-owners Steve and Brandi are splitting this one: Steve on the watch, Brandi on the read.

Watch pick: Hokum (2026), directed by Damian McCarthy, from Steve
Our movie pick for Hex Appeal is Hokum, directed by Damian McCarthy and starring the always delightful Adam Scott. Adam Scott stars as Ohm Bauman, a novelist who travels to a remote inn in Ireland to scatter his parents' ashes, only to get caught up in the local folktale of a witch rumored to terrorize the guests. This movie is part supernatural thriller and part psychological horror, with Ohm struggling with alcoholism and unable to trust all of the weird things he's seen and experienced since arriving at the inn. We thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it's a spooky, tense watch if you're looking for something on the scarier side.

Reading pick: Slewfoot by Brom, from Brandi
When I think hexes, I think witches, and one of my favorite witchy books to return to each spooky season is Slewfoot. In it, Abitha is struggling to maintain her independence while her greedy brother-in-law maneuvers to steal her ample land any way he can. Meanwhile the forest spirits start awakening and townspeople start mysteriously dying. Is Abitha a witch? Or is she just trying to survive? The brilliance of this one lies in the blurriness of that answer. Love this one!

What's your Hex Appeal pick? Post it with and tag to be entered to win our horror prize pack worth over $500. Be sure to check back every day in October for a new prompt.

It's Day 5 of the 2026 Coy's Horror Challenge, where 31 days of horror could win you a spooky prize pack. Remember, you only need one entry to play.

Day 5's prompt is FRANKENFILM: horror stitched together with another genre.

Co-owners Steve and Brandi are both suckers for a good mashup, so they're splitting this one: Steve on the watch, Brandi on the read.

Watch pick: Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010), from Steve
Today's pick is all about genre mashups, and boy do I love me a good horror/comedy. My favorite has to be Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. It starts out just like any classic slasher: a group of young friends on a road trip end up in the woods and run into two creepy backwoods hillbillies they're sure abducted their friend and mean to kill them all. Twist! The hillbillies are just two awkwardly goofy, lovable buddies trying to fix up a cabin, who save a girl from drowning and then have to deal with a bunch of "College Kidddddds" trying to rescue their friend. So many laughs, and so many accidental deaths, ensue.

Reading pick: Kiss Slay Replay by Rachel Harrison, from Brandi
There may be no better mashup of genres in a single book than Rachel Harrison's newest release, Kiss Slay Replay. Willa Sullivan attends her best friend's wedding, and while she's eager to see her old group of friends, she's not looking forward to seeing her very recent ex-fiancé. Luckily she doesn't have to worry about that for long, because a slasher arrives and starts slaughtering everyone! But when Willa wakes up and starts experiencing the same day over (and over) again, she realizes she's going to have to face a wild variety of horrors. This one starts rom-com, goes summer camp slasher, and then... spoilers, so I can't tell you. But it definitely pays homage to some great horror tropes and makes for a very fun October read!

What's your favorite genre mashup? Post your pick with and tag to be entered to win our horror prize pack worth over $500. Be sure to check back every day in October for a new prompt.

It's Day 4 of the 2026 Coy's Horror Challenge, where 31 days of horror could win you a spooky prize pack. Remember, you only need one entry to play.

Day 4's prompt is HAPPY BIRTH-SLAY: a horror from the year you were born.

Co-owners Steve and Brandi were both born into good horror years, so they're tag-teaming this one: Steve on the watch, Brandi on the read.

Watch pick: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), from Steve
A lot of great horror movies came out in 1984... oof, time sure does fly. Some people will say 1983 is the best year in horror, but I disagree. It's '84 fo sho. My movie pick for today is the classic A Nightmare on Elm Street from Wes Craven. Now, it's not my favorite entry in the series. That's a toss-up between Freddy's Revenge and Dream Warriors. But dang if this isn't one of the scariest, especially when you watch it as a child. And Robert Englund's portrayal of the crispy creeper is perfect. We didn't quite get the humorous Freddy that would show up in the 3rd installment, and I think that only added to the terror of this one.

Reading pick: Pet Sematary by Stephen King (1983), from Brandi
First of all, stop doing math in your head. Ok, thank you. I happened to be born in the year of horror brilliance. Pet Sematary was recently ranked the "Scariest Book Ever Printed" by Shortlist, so what better pick can there be? This classic from the master himself, Stephen King, is a must-read for horror fans. Bad news, the cat dies. Good news? He comes back! Well, it's not that good of news, but you have to read it to find out why.

What horror shares your birth year? Post your pick with and tag to be entered to win our horror prize pack worth over $500. Be sure to check back every day in October for a new prompt.

It's Day 3 of the 2026 Coy's Horror Challenge, where 31 days of horror could win you a spooky prize pack. Remember, you only need one entry to play.

Day 3's prompt is JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER: the pick that grabbed you from the cover or poster alone.

Brandon's sharing two that hooked him before he knew the first thing about the story.

Hello all my spooky peeps and peoples. I love some war history, so why not put the spin of ZOMBIES! I never knew the two could be forged into a secret alliance of gore and grand spectacle. One look at these covers promised exactly that, and I was all in.

Watch pick: Overlord (2018)
You'd never think to look at this 2018 war/horror title. Hours before the D-Day invasion, an American paratrooper squad drops behind enemy lines to destroy a N**i radio tower atop a fortified village church. After their plane goes down, the survivors infiltrate the occupied village, and beneath the church they find a secret lab where N**i scientists are using a mysterious serum to reanimate the dead into grotesque, near-invincible mutants. Suddenly the mission is a whole lot bigger than one tower.

Reading pick: '68 by Mark Kidwell, art by Nat Jones
This is the first horror comic I ever read. Set in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam War, it's a dark alternate history where a sudden global undead outbreak turns the battlefield into a nightmare. As American and Vietnamese forces clash in the jungle, they're forced to face not only each other but horde upon horde of flesh-eating zombies. It's a gritty, action-packed fusion of military warfare and classic zombie horror.

What pick hooked you from the cover alone? Post it with and tag to be entered to win our horror prize pack worth over $500. Be sure to check back every day in October for a new prompt.

It's Day 2 of the 2026 Coy's Horror Challenge, where 31 days of horror could win you a spooky prize pack. Remember, you only need one entry to play.

Day 2's prompt is COMFORT HORROR: the one you come back to year after year.

Brandi is sharing the two she revisits every single October.

Comfort horror, for me, is something from the genre I want to return to over and over again every year. Something that brings me nostalgic warm and fuzzies, which admittedly can be a difficult ask when it comes to horror. My movie pick should really be no surprise to anyone who knows me. (We do, after all, have three cats named after characters from this franchise...)

Watch pick: Alien (1979)
Alien is a classic masterpiece. We rewatched this one and H.R. Giger's monsters and gorgeous, creepy set designs still fascinate me. If everyone had just listened to Ripley the first time, this would have been a much shorter movie... but where's the fun in that! Always worth a rewatch, this is my comfort horror pick this year and every year.

Reading pick: The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, with art by Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard
My comfort horror book may make you roll your eyes because this one is surely a massive favorite at this point, but damn is The Walking Dead so good. I was obsessed with zombie stories when I discovered this volume, but what was so different about this one was how much it was a story about survivors. The trauma, the agonizing choices they made, the terrible betrayals. It's an incredible story that I still love to reread today.

What's your comfort horror? Post your pick with and tag to be entered to win our horror prize pack worth over $500. Be sure to check back every day in October for a new prompt.
