Finn spent the weekend in a home—and he taught us a little more about what he needs. ❤️
Finn recently had the opportunity to spend a few days with a potential family through our foster program. While ultimately they realized he wasn’t quite the right fit for their home, their time with him gave us something incredibly valuable: a better picture of Finn outside of the shelter.
They told us Finn does great on a leash and is incredibly lovable. He’s an affectionate, young dog who very much wants to be close to his people. He’s also still learning his manners—he can be jumpy when he’s excited and will benefit from consistency, structure and training.
But the biggest thing we learned is that Finn struggles when his people leave.
And when you know his story, it’s not difficult to understand why.
Finn was found abandoned inside a vacant home with another dog, covered in fleas. We don’t know how long he was there or what his life looked like before someone found him. We only know that at some point, the people in his world left—and now being left alone is scary for him.
His weekend foster described his separation anxiety as significant, so we want to be completely transparent with anyone considering Finn. This isn’t something we expect to disappear the moment he gets adopted. Finn needs someone willing to help him learn that when his person walks out the door, they come back.
That may mean patience. It may mean crate or separation training done gradually and thoughtfully. It will mean consistency, routine and probably some frustrating moments along the way.
But Finn is only 1 year old. He has so much time to learn.
He isn’t looking for someone who expects him to arrive already knowing how to be the perfect house dog. He needs someone willing to teach him how to feel safe in one.
Finn is 44 pounds, lovable, walks beautifully on leash, and has already survived being left behind once.
We’d really like his next person to be the one who teaches him that he doesn’t have to worry about that anymore. ❤️
If you have experience with separation anxiety—or simply the patience and commitment to work through it—we’d love for you to meet Finn.
We are open Tuesday-Friday 4-8pm and Saturday Noon-4pm!
