So I have had a decent amount of time to listen to and re-listen to Chin Ho's new album, and I had to write my own review. Something I have never done before. I used to be a pretty prolific writer, and after discovering Chin Ho! and hearing their music, I was moved to write this. I was a massive alternative rock fan back in the 90's when I was in high school, and everything in this musical journal has just resonated with me, which is certainly a Mystery. I had a lot of fun writing this, and I have easily listened to this album at least 15 times :) I give credit to Big Heavy World and its fine volunteers for the opportunity to be on this ride!

So I did not know much about Chin Ho! as of last year, when I started my record store online. After I came into the Big Heavy World CD collection, I had one of their CDs, The Girl EP, and I put it into my inventory, and that is pretty much where I left it. Sometimes when you deal in records and CDs,...

VERMONT ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: RIVER CITY REBELS

Vermont may not be the first place people think of when they think about punk rock, but River City Rebels are proof that important music can come from well beyond the traditional scenes.

Emerging from Vermont around the turn of the millennium, River City Rebels took their high-energy blend of punk, ska, and brass far beyond the Green Mountains. They signed with Victory Records, toured extensively, appeared on the Warped Tour, evolved from their ska-punk beginnings toward a grittier rock-and-roll sound, and even worked with Sylvain Sylvain of the legendary New York Dolls.t

More than two decades later, their story is still being written.

In the latest Vermont Artist Spotlight from The Maple City Journal, we look beyond the biography and explore the records, the road, the band's musical evolution, and why the River City Rebels catalog deserves a place in the story of Vermont music.

For collectors, these records represent something bigger than another addition to the shelf. They are physical documents of a Vermont band that took its music beyond the state and brought a piece of Vermont into the wider American punk underground.

River City Rebels: From the Green Mountains to the Punk Rock Road Vermont does not immediately announce itself as punk-rock country. There are no sprawling urban blocks synonymous with the birth of a movement, no CBGB mythology embedded in the sidewalks, no Sunset Strip stretching beneath neon signs...

First we would like to thank everyone who came out to support us and the grand opening to include all the local artist who played for us. They were all absolutely wonderful and we will definitely continue with a local artist series after we figure out our rhythm. Secondly another thank for all those who donated for some good causes, the donations will continue through Monday at closing. On Tuesday we will have Andrea from Josh Pallotta Fund at Josh's House, VT stop by and conduct the drawing. We will post the results and also contact the lucky patrons. Let’s keep the donations coming and show our support to veterans who did and continue to do so much for our communities and the organizations that support them :)

TOMORROW IS THE DAY — AND THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN A RAFFLE.

Tomorrow, Maple City Music officially opens its doors.

There are a million things going through my head as I get ready for this moment, but one thing I want to make sure doesn't get lost in all the excitement is why supporting our veteran community is such an important part of what we're building at Maple City Music.

That's why I'm incredibly proud that our Grand Opening raffle is supporting Josh Pallotta Fund Inc. and Josh's House.

Josh's House provides Vermont veterans and service members with something that can be incredibly important after the uniform comes off: a place to belong.

Connection. Camaraderie. Recreation. Wellness. Support. Those things matter.

And they're also a huge part of Maple City Music's long-term vision. I don't want this to simply be a place where you walk in, buy a record, and leave. I want it to be a place where people connect over music, where veterans know they're welcome, and where we can use this little record shop to do some good in our community.

So tomorrow, we're starting exactly that way.

Come celebrate the Grand Opening with us tomorrow. Throw $5 toward a great Vermont organization. Maybe walk away with a PS5, some vinyl, or $100 to spend at Maple City Music.

But most importantly, help us support an organization doing meaningful work for the people who served.

🇺🇸 Veterans supporting veterans. Community supporting community.

That's exactly the kind of place I want Maple City Music to be.

🎶 Music. Community. Connection.
