Heard the story of the Racketeer Nickel? 🪙

When the U.S. Mint released the Liberty Head "V" nickel in early 1883, the reverse featured a large Roman numeral "V" for five, but forgot to write the word "CENTS"

Because the nickel's size closely matched the $5 gold half eagle, fraudsters gold-plated the coins and used them - mostly to buy cheap items (like a 5-cent cigar) to collect $4.95 in genuine gold and silver change.

But if you made a few of these racketeer nickels back then you could, deceitfully, buy yourself a horse 🐎

Shipwreck Coin 🚢🏴‍☠️ at The Vault & Co.

This is a genuine Mexican 8 Reales silver cob coin, minted under King Philip IV between 1621 and 1630.

The coin was recovered from the Spice Islands shipwreck, which occurred around 1630.

Did you know - NGC handles nearly 100% of the certified Spice Islands coins on the market.

They are marked "Genuine" (rather than receiving a traditional 1–70 numeric grade) due to marine salvage corrosion.

Coin Buying Process: when to PASS 🚫

This 1898-O Morgan Silver Dollar in a 65 CAC was a beaut, but the comps weren’t there…

Here’s my typical process for buying coins:

🔎 Find a solid coin
CAC sticker or fatty holder? ✅
Good grade? ✅

💰 Check the market value
Compare price with Greysheet CPG

📊 Check auction history & eBay SOLD listings
See what similar coins have actually sold for

🧐 Compare the grades
The spread between grades matters. A 65 CAC could sell for exponentially more 64 CAC

🚫 Know when to PASS
Sometimes you gotta pass on a great coin if the resale value isn’t there

That being said, if you’re buying for your collection and not for flipping - get that coin if you love it!!
