Ever wonder what those crystals that imprinted your agate looked like when they formed? Me too! So I made a silicone mold of each impression to decide the crystal type that it was originally. A lot of times it’s calcite inclusions sometimes barite that over time got erased by the hands of time in acidic water. Siderite is also included in a lot of our Lake Superior agates. Normally siderite isn’t very hard by itself and prone to the same fate as the calcite/siderite. But when they formed in our silica rich agates they gained superpowers and gained a couple numbers up on the mohs scale of hardness from the silica inside the agate remaining intact ✌️

Can you guess the agate apart from the chert? Sometimes it can be tricky to tell when they share a lot of the same colors and characteristics. Banded Jasper and Mary Ellen Jasper are also major contenders for Lake Superior Agate imposters. Have a rocking day 🤘

Have you heard of Chinese Rainflower Agates before? They’re also named Yangtze River Agates and they are naturally polished and shaped by the currents of the river. They’re found in gravel beds and gravel pits along the Yangtze river very similarly to the finish of a water washed Lake Superior agate we find locally. They also have many variety types that our state gemstone shares. They’re officially Sara’s favorite agate 😎
