So I just finished Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth, so let me try to tell you what I thought (without spoilers).

The story is told by 81 year old Elsie (Mabel) Fitzpatrick. Elsie is a spitfire, fiercely independent, wonderfully grumpy and maybe the most endearing protagonist I have encountered in a long while. From the beginning we are introduced to her 7-year-old neighbor (Persephone) who chatters nonstop and bubbles with boundless energy, with her never-ending presence nearly forging friendship onto reluctant Elsie. The relationship between these two characters alone makes this novel a must read.

Elsie tells us in the prologue " It's interesting to note that there are two groups of people who are rarely, if ever, suspected of murder. These groups are elderly women, and little girls." Ever since Elsie was very young, people around her have ended up dying. It earned her the moniker "Mad Mabel", and the plotline develops as the story alternates between present day and 1950's childhood. The central question here centers on whether Elsie (Mabel) is actually a stone cold killer, or maybe something else entirely. I am such a skeptical reader, so as the book unravels I had real questions about Elsie and the prospect of her maybe being an unreliable narrator.

After finishing this I was left with thoughts about other peoples perceptions and the roll they play in shaping us into the person we become. I think it's uncommon to find something so sharp, witty and amazingly funny, wrapped up in single novel! This is a tough book to source (right now) , I have one copy left in stock, and more on the way! If you have already read this let me know what you thought in the comments.

If you know who lives at 221B Baker Street, then this set might be for you! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote nine Sherlock Holmes books between 1887-1927. They include four novels (novellas, really) and five short story collections. Many of the short stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine and later collected in book form. A wonderful set for reading, complete with original illustrations. Sold as a set and on the shelves today!

If you stop Downtown make sure to check out the hanging baskets that are on some of the light posts! These got pummeled in that 4th of July storm, and they have really bounced back. The one in front of the bookstore is almost like a jungle! Hats off to the City for keeping them going - the water truck is out here nearly every morning!

So much dog-love going around on these pages! Thank-you for standing up for Sydney, for reading her story and sharing your photos and special connections. It's impossible for me to read her story and these comments with dry eyes. I hope she is able to find some solace in your heart-felt contributions. Many of you already know my best friend, here she is this morning modelling our latest Stephen King acquisitions. Book people are the very best people, thank-you, again, for your tremendous support!

One of our newest employees at the bookshop is hurting and I think maybe you can help! Earlier this summer, I convinced Sydney to help us on a part-time basis. In her regular life she is an educator, a librarian, and dog-mom extraordinaire. She is also a great person. The thing is, just yesterday I found out that she suddenly lost her beloved dog of seven years (Indy). He was her center and her everything. Sometimes we bond with our animals on an extremely deep level, and if you have been there then you understand. I am sharing the story she posted below. She is devastated, and I cannot think of any words to really help my friend. If you follow the link and read her story, please consider her request. Lets flood her comments section with pictures of the pets that have made a difference in our lives. I already sent her a picture of Greta, maybe in the spirit of lifting someone up you could do the same?

We found a phone book (what's that?) from 1955! Most of the phone numbers are 3 or 4 digits, and some have a letter designation after numbers. Anyone know what that means? I wish I knew someone I could look-up from 1955 (send me a name in the comments and I will match it with a photo of the page if it's present). There is a phrase across the top of many of the pages that says " A normal tone of voice is understood best over the telephone." I guess the more things change, the more they remain the same. Update: Thanks for all the interest! we found someone who would like to have the book, so my phone book exercise is coming to an end!
