Every great collection has a story, and sometimes you’re lucky enough to be part of it twice.

Years ago, here at AllGood Coin Company, we had the opportunity to help a collector build this impressive collection of Morgan Dollars. It didn’t come together overnight. It took years of searching, patience, careful choices, and the excitement of finding the right coins along the way.

That dedication resulted in the collection you see here today, filled with beautiful, high-grade Morgans and some exceptional pieces.

Now, years later, that same collection has made its way back through our doors, and it’s pretty special to see these coins again.

Collections have chapters. Goals are accomplished, interests evolve, and coins once carefully sought out become opportunities for another collector to continue their own journey. Several of these pieces will now be heading to CAC, while others will eventually find homes in new collections.

For us, that’s one of the best parts of this hobby. We had the privilege of helping build this collection once, and now we get to appreciate it again as these coins begin their next chapter.

Historical Context:

Struck during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, this 1807 half dollar comes from the final year of a design that had represented the denomination since 1796. Early half dollars were produced using individual die pairs, and collectors today identify those combinations by Overton number. This O-105 survives here in an impressive AU58, just below Mint State.

1925 Norse-American Centennial Medal

In 1825, a small sailing ship named the Restauration left Norway carrying immigrants bound for America. Their voyage became a symbolic beginning of organized Norwegian immigration to the United States, helping open a path that hundreds of thousands of Norwegians would follow in the generations ahead.

One hundred years later, America commemorated that journey with this unusual Norse-American Centennial Medal. Authorized by Congress and struck at the Philadelphia Mint, it was designed by famed sculptor James Earle Fraser, the artist behind the Buffalo Nickel.

Its Viking imagery reaches even further into the past. A Norse warrior stands on one side, while the other shows a Viking longship beneath the words “Authorized by Congress of the United States of America.” The design connected Norway’s seafaring heritage with the much later story of immigrants crossing the Atlantic to build new lives in America.

Despite its coin-like appearance, this was never legal-tender money. This thick silver version had a distribution of roughly 33,750 pieces, and this particular survivor has been preserved in NGC MS65, a century after it was struck. It brings together Viking imagery, immigration, and the story of generations of Norwegian Americans in one remarkably unusual piece.

Of the original 100,000 struck, PCGS estimates fewer than 10,000 survive today in all grades, with only about 123 believed to remain in Mint State. That combination of low mintage, heavy circulation, and an exceptionally small number of high-grade survivors has made the 1893-S the undisputed key date of the Morgan Dollar series.

1850 Mormon $5 Gold Piece

In 1850, the Salt Lake Valley was one of the most isolated settlements in America. Just a few years after arriving, Mormon pioneers had transformed an empty desert valley into a growing community with farms, irrigation systems, workshops, and businesses. Far from established cities and with few outside resources, they relied on determination, ingenuity, and hard work to build nearly everything they needed from the ground up.

As gold from the California Gold Rush reached Utah, there was no practical way to turn raw gold into everyday money. With no nearby mint and little banking infrastructure, local leaders established a mint in Salt Lake City. Using hand-engraved dies and a locally built coining press, they transformed frontier gold into coins that allowed commerce to grow in one of America’s newest settlements. If something was needed, they built it.

The coin’s design reflected the values of the community that produced it. The inscription “Holiness to the Lord,” along with the clasped hands and the all-seeing eye, represented faith, unity, divine guidance, and honest labor, making these pieces unlike any other gold coins struck for circulation in American history.

The mint operated for only about a decade before federal coinage became more accessible, and many of these coins were later melted or disappeared from circulation. Today, surviving Mormon gold pieces are among the rarest and most historically significant treasures of the American frontier, offering a rare glimpse into the determination, ingenuity, and resourcefulness that transformed an isolated desert valley into a thriving community in the American West.

📚 Collector Highlight

Since 2012, Troy, owner of AllGood Coin Company, has been building one of the most ambitious die-variety collections in American numismatics: the Capped Bust Half Dollar Overton Variety Set.

At first glance, many of these coins appear almost identical. But each one represents a different chapter in the story of America’s early Mint. Every variety traces back to the exact pair of hand-engraved dies used to strike that coin, making each die marriage a unique piece of early American history.

Between 1807 and 1836, Capped Bust Half Dollars were struck on large screw presses using individually hand-engraved dies. When a die wore out or broke, the Mint often replaced only the damaged obverse or reverse, creating hundreds of unique die marriages.

In 1967, numismatist Al C. Overton published the reference that organized these die marriages. His numbering system remains the standard collectors use today, with each recognized variety assigned its own Overton number, giving collectors a common language for studying and collecting the series.

Today, approximately 450 recognized Overton varieties are known. Completing the set is one of the greatest challenges in American die-variety collecting. Some varieties are so rare that only a handful of examples are known. making a complete collection something very few collectors will ever accomplish.

Troy is now within roughly 70 varieties of that remarkable goal.

What makes the pursuit even more impressive is that he isn’t simply checking boxes. He searches for coins with exceptional eye appeal, original surfaces, and strong grades, often passing on examples that don’t meet his standards. For him, the reward isn’t just adding another coin. It’s the hunt, the friendships built along the way, and the opportunity to preserve an important chapter of early American coinage.
