A little life update from behind the doors of Hartford House…

We’ve been a little quieter here lately, as earlier this Summer John underwent major spine surgery at UCSF, and is doing really well, but recovery is a full-time job.

While John has been focused on healing, I’ve been doing a little triple-duty keeping Hartford House ticking along and holding down the fort at home.

We are enormously grateful for the friends and family that have shown us love and support in the simplest of ways — it’s meant the world to us. Thank you to our amazing team that rallies round to keep things going and the Hartford House vibes high.

John is getting stronger every week, and I’m very ready to have my partner-in-crime back at full strength. ❤️

We’re thrilled to welcome Brackish to Hartford House, September 18–20, for a very special three-day pop-up.

From Charleston, South Carolina, Brackish transforms natural feathers into extraordinary wearable art — jewelry, belts, bow ties, earrings, handbags and more — each piece made by hand and completely unique.

For the weekend, we’ll be expanding our Brackish collection with new and unusual pieces brought especially for the event — but what we’re most excited about is the opportunity for you to step into the design process and create your own Brackish piece.

Ansley from Brackish will be joining us throughout the weekend, sharing the stories, materials and craftsmanship behind the collection and helping you discover — or create — something truly one of a kind.

You absolutely must visit Understudy next time you’re in St. Helena.

John and I finally made it there today, and we were genuinely blown away. It rivals the kind of inventive, beautifully executed food experiences you’d expect in Melbourne—one of the world’s great culinary cities in our opinion—and it’s right here on our doorstep.

Nestled alongside the MAC Napa Valley museum, Understudy is equal parts café, larder and culinary destination. We can personally vouch for the Honeycomb Latte and the Orange & White Chocolate Madeleine—both exceptional. Every detail, from the food to the coffee to the warm, professional service, was spot on.

The video says it all: a hive of activity and counters filled with beautiful fresh treats and even terrines and meats to take home. They also host events, making it a place you’ll want to return to again and again. You’ll notice dogs love it too!

Bravo, Understudy. We’ll be back.

Yesterday, John and I joined the roar of more than 80,000 fans in Mexico City for the Opening Ceremony and first match of the FIFA World Cup.

Mexico’s supporters were extraordinary — passionate, generous, loud, joyful and endlessly welcoming. What an atmosphere.

As a South African standing in a sea of green Mexican shirts, watching our flag raised and singing our national anthem — I couldn’t be more proud. Pure magic.

The result may not have gone our way, but the experience was unforgettable.
