St. Helena turns 150 years old tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this incredible community. 🥂

Join us on Main Street as we celebrate this milestone together! Hartford House will be pouring bubbles and serving bites from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 24th.

The city’s official birthday celebration runs from 4 to 6 PM, with strolling musicians, a plaque dedication at Lyman Park, and shops staying open late (7pm) along Main Street. We’re keeping the party going an extra hour because 150 years deserves a little extra!

Here’s to St. Helena past, present, and future! We are so honored to call this town home! 🎂✨

Flying into Zimbabwe was particularly special to me. It’s the country of my birth. This was the first time I’ve been back since leaving as an infant. The land is so lush and green at this time of year.
We stayed at the Victoria Falls Hotel, which opened in 1904. It was built by the British as accommodation for workers and travelers connected to the Cape-to-Cairo railway project. It is almost perfectly preserved from that era and feels like stepping back in time.
The hotel, wrapped by wide verandas and manicured lawns, overlooks the Victoria Falls Bridge. Guests take afternoon high tea with a view of the spray from the falls and rainbows. They affectionately call it “The Grand Old Lady of the Falls.”

We were fortunate to see Victoria Falls close to full flow. More than a mile wide, the Zambezi River surges over the basalt lip dropping roughly 350 feet into the gorge below.
The sound arrives first. It’s not a typical waterfall roar. It’s a deep, rolling thunder that you feel through the ground and in your chest. Early explorers described it as “the smoke that thunders.” The mist rises hundreds of feet into the air, visible from miles away.
We walked along the rainforest paths opposite the falls and were totally drenched by the spray. It felt like a heavy, warm tropical rainstorm. So hard to capture because it’s so long. Just mesmerizing.
Nature at full force.

From our continued travels through South Africa, we found ourselves in Franschhoek. One of the country’s most beautiful wine regions, about an hour from Cape Town, tucked between dramatic mountains and row after row of layered vineyards.

Franschhoek means “French Corner,” settled by French Huguenots in the late 1600s, and that heritage still runs deep in every café, gallery, and oak-lined street. Think Cape Dutch architecture, world class restaurants, and some of the finest wines in South Africa. Helen noted how much it reminded her of Napa Valley and St. Helena, and honestly, the parallels are impossible to miss.

We stayed right in the heart of it all at Le Petit Manoir, a gorgeous five-star boutique hotel on the main street, which made wandering the village effortless. Long lunches, gallery stops, great wine, and yes, the best carrot cake Helen has ever had. There was also the small matter of shipping a very carefully packed box of Franschhoek goodies home. More on that soon.

Every February, Cape Town becomes the creative heartbeat of an entire continent.

We recently attended the Investec Cape Town Art Fair – Africa’s largest contemporary art fair – and honestly, it never gets old. Hundreds of artists, galleries, and makers from around the world, all under one roof, each with something extraordinary to say.

For us, it’s never purely about collecting. It’s about immersion. Walking those floors, we’re absorbing texture, color, scale, the way a piece commands a room or whispers from a corner. Every work we stood in front of sparked a conversation about what we’re building back home at Hartford House and the atmosphere we want guests to feel the moment they walk through the door.

Craftsmanship. Culture. Storytelling. That’s what Cape Town gave us this February. And that’s exactly what we bring back to St. Helena.

Chommies at Oranjezicht Market. We couldn’t walk past without stopping 🐶

What a brand. Built by people who genuinely, deeply love dogs and it shows in every single thing they make.

A stick exchange (yes, like a book exchange but for sticks 🪵), soft-toy salamis, plush sausages... it’s joyful, it’s silly, it’s completely irresistible.

And the best part? You can find Chommies right here at Hartford House on Main Street, St. Helena 🤍

Oranjezicht City Farm Market, Cape Town 🤍

Set against the ocean at Granger Bay, this is where Cape Town comes alive on a weekend morning. Farmers, makers, and chefs all in one beautifully curated space. Ocean air, live music, long communal tables, and food that makes you want to stay for hours.

We first discovered it a year ago, and coming back felt like running into an old friend.

And speaking of old friends, we managed to steal a few minutes with David, the founder of BardoVano sunglasses 🕶️ It was such a joy to reconnect and tell him in person what we hear every week in the store: that our customers in California absolutely love his sunglasses.

There’s something special about being able to close that loop. From Cape Town maker to Napa Valley customer, and back again. You can shop BardoVano at Hartford House on Main Street, St. Helena.

This is exactly why we travel 🌍

Continuing our South African trip, we spent a perfect evening at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel. My dear childhood friend Donna even flew in from Johannesburg to join us for the weekend. So sweet and far too short.

We snapped a selfie at the back entrance and of course one at the front too. This pink hotel, as it’s fondly known, is luxury sublime. Sundowners in the garden before dinner, that South African ritual of a relaxed drink as the sun sets, felt wonderfully civilized.

Wandering the grounds and visiting the gift shop was pure joy. Chommies, Ardmore, Cape Cobra, Fieldbar. Clearly great taste all around. We were also wildly jealous of their special edition pink Fieldbar.

The artwork throughout the hotel is just gorgeous. Highly suggest a visit!

One of the highlights of our time in South Africa was a visit to the Cape Cobra factory. Seeing each piece crafted by hand, start to finish, was incredibly special.

We carry Cape Cobra at Hartford House in St Helena, so meeting the team and seeing the care and precision behind every bag made the experience even more meaningful. ✨

We were so excited to stop by Melvill & Moon recently on our South African journey! ✨

Robert Melvill welcomed us in as if we were old friends, and that openness stayed with us. Alongside Ajony, the store manager, whose care and attention made the visit feel genuinely personal, it was clear how much pride they take in both the process and the people behind it. Robert speaks about the leather, the craft, and the work with such ease and respect that you immediately understand why the pieces feel the way they do.

John, meanwhile, completely lost focus once he spotted the Land Rover Defenders. At this point I think he believes one will somehow follow us home. We’ll see.

Their roll-up leather backgammon and draft games are spectacular, and there is a very good chance you will be seeing them offered at Hartford House soon!

Good people, thoughtful craftsmanship, and creators that inspire us. We can’t wait to bring a little bit of this journey home!
