A special pickguard, for a special guitar, in memory of a special person...
I had some special tortious material saved for one of my personal D’Angelico restoration.
However, when friend Chuck Nicholson acquired Johnny Smith’s D’Angelico and asked me to make a pickguard for it, I felt the need to do something special.
The special material I had been saving for one of my own projects had been given to me by my dear friend and mentor Tom Marcell, years ago.
Tom worked with me when I was a kid at Ronnie shop. And it was Tom who was apprenticing with John Monteleone, that first brought me over to John’s shop for a formal introduction, when I was so very young.
Tom was always supportive and encouraging. He taught me many methods of restoration and repair, that I use to this day.
In a tragic accident, Tom passed away in 2025. He was a very special friend, and a big part of my journey and path into guitar making.
So with a special guitar to make a pickguard for, and a special piece of material saved for a project that might not have been as special as Johnny Smith’s Guitar. I decided it was best to use this special material for a very special guitar, Johnny Smith’s D’Angelico, for an extremely special person, Thomas Marcell and his memory....
So to Johnny Smith, thank you for the music and inspiration.
To Tom Marcell, thank you for the encouragement and belief in a young kids “hands”.
And to friend Chuck Nicholson, a thank you for the opportunity to create a special guard for a guitar that inspired a young kid’s mind when he first held it and the chance to pay tribute to a friend and hero that help teach him to make the very pickguard pictured here...
Tom Marcell.... Godspeed
