Safe in the mailbox.
Much safer than the community of nuns in 1898, cloistered together in the Convent of the Sisters of Saint Francis, deep in the snowbound Berkshire Mountains in Western Massachusetts.
For something dark, furry, fierce and deadly walks on four feet from a high cavern through high snow and ice winds to the door of the convent. Sniffing the air. Looking for blood.

I was introduced to the writing of Chris McKinley reading his first collection of intense short noir crime stories, Coal Black. Set in Eastern, Kentucky my first taste was not enough.
Following up with his first novel, Once These Hills, a savoring, unforgettable tale of murder and justice featuring a strong heroine who accidentally unearths an ancient body in a seep bog, releasing a curse. Set in the late 1800s up on Black Boar Mountain in Eastern Kentucky it was a page-turner, and one not quick to forget.
In Chris McGinley the reader is soon aware of not only being in the presence of a gothic horror teller of tails, but an emerging master of his craft.

A scarce novel about Dutch Schultz, from the author of the bestseller, The Hoods. A photo cover, movie tie-in was released in 1961 starring the late Vic Morrow.
Harry Grey was born Herschel Goldberg in Russia. He emigrated and became a gangster who wrote a semi-fictional biography The Hoods in 1952. It was the model for the 1984 Sergio Leone film, Once Upon a Time in America. Grey's part was played by Robert De Niro.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born 130 years ago, on September 24, 1896. He was one of the most influential novelists of the 20th century.

William S. Burroughs mentioned him often, saying that he admired Fitzgerald’s prose. He called him the “poet of the Jazz Age” and “a very great writer.” Once he said that the end of “The Great Gatsby” was “among the great passages of English prose.” He did not think Fitzgerald captured dialogue well, though. He wrote:

“Many good writers don't. Fitzgerald's characters are delineated more by his descriptive prose than by what they say. His dialogue tends to be wooden, with occasional flashes of brilliant insight as when Gatsby says about Daisy's voice: 'It's full of money.'”

Burroughs wrote a short essay called “The Great Gatsby,” in which he discusses and criticises the novel, talks about whether it could be successfully filmed, rewrites it somewhat with Gatsby becoming a ju**ie, and then ends with a cut-up using material from the book. This appears in “The Adding Machine.”
