A Cut Above Knife and Leather Co LLC What sets A Cut Above Knife & Leather co apart is how your items are sharpened and cared for in our shop. We understand the need for a sharp, capable blade.

We use 5-6 belts followed by leather stropping instead of a typical two-part sharpening approach to ensure that your blade is sharp, capable & safe. As a firefighter myself I understand the need for quality items. Leather in the fire service goes back to the beginning of the fire service. Leather goods have become a tradition as well as a symbol to a firefighter.

Made by a firefighter, for firefighters. 🔥

I’ve spent more than 15 years in the fire service, so when I make a piece of fire gear, I’m not guessing at what works.

I know what it’s like to actually wear this stuff. I know what gets annoying on a long shift, what takes a beating, what needs to be easy to grab, and why the little details matter.

That experience goes into every radio strap, glove strap, set of suspenders, shield, chin strap and custom piece that leaves my shop.

Because good fire gear shouldn’t just look good. It needs to work.

There’s something special about a knife that was built for a specific purpose. Even more so when it was built specifically for you.

The handle material.
The shape. The finish.
The way it feels in your hand.
Even the sheath it is stored in.

That’s the part of custom knife making I enjoy most. Taking an idea and turning it into something you’ll actually carry, use, and hopefully hand down someday.

It’s been a little while since a custom knife left the shop, but this one was worth the wait.

Meet our custom Elk Skinner! 🫎

This piece features a stunning piece of competition walnut that was stabilized right here in the shop. The depth, grain, and natural color in this wood deserved a high-polish finish, and we think the final result speaks for itself!

To finish it off, it’s paired with a handcrafted leather scout carry sheath, built specifically for this knife for a secure, comfortable carry.
