In honor of International Friendship Day today, let's talk about the plant that coined the nickname Friendship Plant. Hostas!
Hostas were first introduced to the United States in the 19th century, with species originating in China and Japan. Since then, humans have created over 7,200 registered Hosta cultivars.
With human intervention and selective breeding, some Hosta varieties can thrive in full sun, while others, such as the blue varieties, require full shade to maintain the richness of their leaves. Hostas are extremely weather hardy and have a 30+ year lifespan.
Hosta’s boast stalks of beautiful white or purple bell-shaped flowers. Pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds will visit Hosta’s, but they should have other pollination support nearby.
Fun Fact:
*Hostas are a part of the Asparagus family, and most species are completely safe for human consumption. Yes, they taste like asparagus too.
