Hole Punch Toys

Hole Punch Toys Toys for grown ups. Sculpture is relatively new to me. From there, it was a short leap (in theory) from customization to casting my own designs in plastic.

Historically, I have been an artist of the pencil/pen and paint variety, but in late 2010, at the encouragement of a friend, I tried my hand at customizing a prefabricated vinyl doll (rhymes with 'bunny') and immediately took to the immediacy and malleability of clay. In practice, it proved more difficult. I had taken on the dual arts of sculpture and mold making, the former of which came somewhat

naturally, but the latter I knew nothing about and began teaching myself by gleaning bits of information from books and the internet, and trial and error. It is a long, sometimes frustrating, often tedious process. But I love it always. My sculpture is much like my two dimensional art, in that I find myself wanting to break forms down into their most basic components while retaining the essence of the thing. Visual aesthetic is almost secondary to the tactile experience. They are made with my hands and are meant to be touched. As such, they need more than anything, to feel good. I believe if I can align those two properties, to make pieces that both look and feel wonderful, I can approach my own personal perfection. I am working on it.

Ran across some old photos (10 years?) of some of the OG Hole Punch toys.
This is the Plugs Bunny 1.0
From a purely sculptural standpoint it's not terrible design. From an anally Insertable standpoint it was awful. The 4 point axis of the base made it virtually unwearable. I didn't have enough personal experience with plugs to anticipate the problem and in my excitement to bring product to market didn't bother to test it. It wasn't until real world feedback started coming in that I realized my mistake. It was embarrassing and demoralizing at the time but an important lesson in the value of patience (and butt cheek mechanics).
Eventually I returned to the concept and reworked it to make what is currently one of the more popular designs.
Moral?
Have patience.
Listen to feedback.
Try again.
Or in some cases, admit an idea doesn't work and move on.
