A few years ago, I returned to Salem Ohio, where I grew up. The downtown was 7% occupied based on the historical downtown buildings occupancy. A healthy downtown should be 70% or more occupied, all floors included. Many good people worked hard to bring the city back. Now, I see a downtown with effectively all of the street level occupied. With all available space, I would guess that it is around 60%. That is a wonderful thing and it is completely a result of the work of the downtown T.A.C. Everyone involved, the grand small businesses downtown and the wonderful tenants in Courtyard Square should be so very proud of what you have done. You saved a city. Courtyard square is now 100% occupied in all available space, and we are prepping upper areas for offices.

Sidewalk repairs downtown won't effect us! Later in the project, repairs are planned on neighboring side streets, Penn and Lincoln, but nothing that should effect access to Courtyard Square.

Santa’s coming to Salem Thursday

SALEM – With more than 40 groups in the parade, five bands and the bearded man in the big red suit, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to see many people out to this year’s Christmas parade.

Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Salem News, Thursday’s parade will be much bigger than last year’s COVID-19 reduced event. It will also include a light up night at the Salem City Hall and Broadway following the event.

Lori Anderson, administrative assistant at the Chamber of Commerce, said not only will Santa ride through the parade for all to see, but he will greet children at the light up event. Triggered by Mayor John Berlin, the lights are expected for both the tree in front of city hall and Broadway.

The bands from Salem, Leetonia, Lisbon, United and Wellsville High Schools are all expected to perform in the parade. Additionally, Anderson said the Encore Ensemble will be on hand to entertain the crowd at light up night.

“We’re just excited about it,” City Service Safety Director Joe Cappuzzello said, “and we’re hoping everyone will come out.”

Those attending the parade should be able to see better from the sidewalks along East State Street. For the sake of safety during the time of the event, Cappuzzello said there will be no parking along East State Street in the area of the parade route with police starting to alert motorists with signs in the early afternoon.

By 5:30 p.m., about an hour before the parade, the hope is for all the vehicles to be cleared from the street. The intersections along the parade route, such as at North Lincoln Avenue after Ninth Street and at Pershing Street coming north into town will also be blocked about 15 minutes before the beginning of the parade.

“We hope the restaurants and businesses will understand,” Cappuzzello said. “We appreciate their patience in doing that.”

The parade will travel down F.E. Cope, North Lincoln Avenue, East State Street and North Ellsworth to Second Street.

Cappuzzello talked about all the work that has gone into the event by people involved from the Chamber of Commerce and city hall employees. Additionally, he hopes this event will feel like a return to a more normal holiday season after an abbreviated event last year.
