August 15 | Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, August 15, the Catholic Church celebrates one of the most beautiful mysteries of our faith: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Mary was not simply given a place of honor in Heaven.
The Church teaches that, at the completion of her earthly life, she was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This is the dogma solemnly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in Munificentissimus Deus.
Mary's Assumption is not something that happened through her own power.
It is a grace given to her by God because of her unique participation in the mystery of Christ. Her entire life was united to her Son—from the Annunciation to Bethlehem, from Calvary to the Resurrection.
And now, she shares in the glory of her risen Son.
The Assumption reminds us that death does not have the final word.
Jesus Christ conquered sin and death through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Mary's glorification gives us a glimpse of the destiny God promises His faithful children.
As Pope Benedict XVI explained, Mary's Assumption confirms her complete solidarity with Christ in both His struggle against sin and His victory over death.
Mary also did not become distant from us after entering Heaven.
She remains our Mother.
She continues to intercede for her children and points us toward Jesus. Her Assumption calls us not merely to admire her, but to imitate her faith, humility, obedience, and love.
Mary once said:
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”
She trusted God completely.
She accepted His will.
She carried Christ within her.
She stood faithfully beneath the Cross.
And she remained united to Him until the end.
Now she reigns with Christ in heavenly glory.
Her Assumption gives every Christian a reason to hope.
One day, if we remain faithful to Christ, we too hope to share in the glory of the Resurrection.
So today, let us look toward Heaven with Mary.
When life becomes difficult, remember where we are going.
When suffering feels overwhelming, remember that this world is not our final home.
When death causes fear, remember the promise of the Resurrection.
And when you feel far from God, take Mary's hand and ask her to lead you closer to her Son.
Holy Mary, Mother of God and Queen of Heaven, pray for us.
May her Assumption strengthen our hope, deepen our faith, and remind us that our ultimate treasure is not here on earth, but in Heaven with Christ.
🙏 Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed body and soul into Heaven, pray for us!
✝️ Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary!
