DO I have Grapes of Wrath, he asks. Is the Pope Catholic? Only one of my favorites. Thank you Mrs.
Esposito, Salem High School circa 1996. If I could replicate that English class in the new classroom space….sigh. One can dream. And read Steinbeck.

Have you been in yet this week? Have you seen the new feature table? It’s full of Wendell Berry and the like. It feels like nature+nurture, but bigger🄰. It’s felt a bit foreign to me as I navigate working up front instead of the back office, and getting used to the POS again and all its updates. Kind of like new clothes for a new school year that might be a little too big yet but that you’ll ’grow into’. That’s what it feels like. I’ll be open 10-5 today. It will be me! So come stop in - half is still closed off and paper is still on the windows (since I would prefer privacy if and when I’m in late working). A sign is in the works for out front, will have something for the sign review board soon… In the meantime, the little-shop-that-could is plugging along:)

a note for families šŸ¤Ž

nature+nurture is a family-friendly shop, but our space is not childproofed. Also, please keep in mind this is a very soft opening and would like to remain open while we finish.

Children are welcome with their grown-ups close beside them.

For everyone’s safety, and to help us care for our books, merchandise, displays, and furnishings, children must remain with and be actively supervised by an adult at all times.

Toddlers and very young children must be held, in a stroller, holding an adult’s hand, or kept immediately beside you. They may not roam freely through the shop.

Many of our books and other items are within a child’s reach and can be easily damaged. Our shop is filled with books, cards, paper goods, art supplies, posters, glassware, and other fragile or valuable merchandise. Items on our shelves must remain new and in excellent condition for the customer who purchases them—including inventory that may be needed to fulfill an online order.

Please do not allow children to pull books or merchandise from shelves without your help, climb on furniture or displays, open packaged merchandise, or enter behind the cash wrap or into staff-only areas.

We want children to explore, wonder, read, and discover here. We simply ask their grown-ups to explore alongside them, remembering that first and foremost we are a retail store.

We do have a seating area up front where one grown up can sit with a young child and read a book from our community copies kept here for this reason. We even have a couple baskets full of community copy board books. If a child is very antsy and wanting to move it might be best to get them where they can do that safely and freely. We hope to be here many years and these years are fleeting! I promise they will pass and they are enjoyable in the right settings. But safety first for all and all the thingsā¤ļø

Thank you for helping us keep nature+nurture safe, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone

This one of a kind original oil painting by local en pleine air artist Nancy Hawkins sold to a very special customer today. Patio Black-Eyed Susans. There are other paintings throughout the space by Nancy, and I’m honored to showcase them. They are for sale, but I did take off the online checkout feature as they are all local scenes and I would to love to keep them in the homes of those who have memories and attachments to these local haunts. Meaning matters. Nancy can capture the light in any place in a way that breaks your heart and lifts your soul. In a world of cheap ai art, buy real art that will make you ponder, remember, think and feel. Local art supports local community.

This was my scene yesterday or last night at some point when I still had so much to hang, price, move and clean before opening today. No matter how much we all collectively did, there is always the night before, and more that needs done than you can possibly do, but you try. 5 years ago I pulled an all nighter before reopening 515, and I ended up doing the same last night at 553. Someone asked how I was still standing. That’s what adrenaline is for. And Provision and sandals that don’t wear out in deserts - some of you know this. Alone in a building for 6 months. Alone with decisions and consequences and responsibilities and sacrifice, and bills, and fear, and grit, and determination. Alone with some deep work behind the scenes to come to terms with some things. I’m not the same person I was when I moved over. I would love to write about it one day. But first I’ll write about Kass and how she is also not the same employee. She is almost like a business partner with how invested she is and all the ownership she takes. A true operations lead who’s earned her stripes in this when no one knew where to find anything for thousands of books ordered in the midst of chaos and boxes and new challenges every day. I’ll write about how I will do anything to keep these doors open to pay my employees now, and provide more for more. For Dalton who jumped over from volunteer-work-for-books-help over the course of 4 years to a full work week, when I knew my inventory work couldn’t last without him. And we love having him around so much. Wait till you see how he catalogued my American Lit and History when we open that hallway. Emma who joined the team a little over a month ago and helped us over the finish line with a can do independent cheerful spirit who is used to running registers and is going to help check out so we can run operations, and who I asked to take my home section to where I always intended but never could finish. And the Kerrs - Momager Kathy, I have no words right now, and Sarah, Zak, Jenny, Matt, Joey, Josh and little Danny - from moving us to helping rescue us from a deluge of online orders and helping my brain process how to get out of a perpetual catch-22. Stacy Irwin who volunteered to come paint (and repaint;) and support in the same way she always did as a loyal customer. And others along the way at the right time! Caroline! Kass’s Dad DJ, The Saltsgivers, Julie Bell, the Citino’s, DeSalvos… not to mention some of the best contractors. Lisa and Alvie who gave me ceiling tile work and a vacation for me and my kids. Brian Batzli who put some life on hold many many days to help when other literal things fell apart (ahem bookshelves). And Alyssa when I did. My parents. My parents my parents😭 my parents😭 it’s been a journey for us all since I fled here with 5 kids 7 years ago and thought I’d need to stay a week or so, and only just this year, since I moved, truly unpacked so much. The trauma that built a bookstore. A bookstore community that saved me. I am present. I am here. I have grieved. I have moved things that lived in a once upon a time place to a building I own now, a home in many ways, and that houses pieces of a former life, tucked inbetween books and people I love. Something I built. I had to make something. I had to live. My kids got to see it tonight when they returned to town - I wanted to still be open for them when they got back. And I am home, and will sleep, and will work among books and things so pretty I want to cry. I will solve problems and try to make things better, and I’ll mess up and try again, determined and hopeful, most days, and I’ll love on people as hard as I can - if they feel safe. Look for safety. Build something that matters and that will build you. Tell a story that must be told to understand it. Make a mark even if it doesn’t work. It’s the things that don’t work that lead to the things that do. So much love and thanks for a very special dayšŸ’œ.

Ok I’m going to commit. Hours for tomorrow 10am to 8pm. There is plenty to shop in the front part of the store until I can finish the rest. Come get a peek - finally - at all the work on LABOR DAY. Very appropriate. 5 unmedicated births and this one might have been the hardestšŸ˜…. I’m sitting in my front seating area - where it will be a phone free laptop free analogue only section with furniture you can order, oil paintings by my favorite artist (who happens to be local) - Nancy Hawkinsā¤ļø. Wallpaper by my dearest online friend Alice of Alice, ā€˜Community Copies’ of books you can find in the store to buy new, or pull one of these to read to see if you like it, or buy at a lower price. Come shop the Wendell Berry feature table, the collectible classics bookshelf built by Brian Batzli (thank you Alyssa!!) The custom cashwrap built by Crowes Cabinets and ARES. Browse the new stationary and gift section, the art closet (still in progress.) You can get glimpses of the classroom and the rest of the store but the kids section and most of the nature themed sections on back will be closed off until I can finish. But we need to be open and you can watch as we finish and keep turning the pages back toward the end! The story has been building and it’s all coming together. We just need you to be a part of it to finish🌱. Spread the word, grab a friend and come say hi! Let me practice remembering how to use my POS again, train some newbies, and let me rejoice that I don’t have to order in, go find in boxes, or pack up and ship out anything you’ll be buying tomorrowšŸ˜…. I am dying to see some of your faces again! I miss my locals!

Another Berry late night. I have a feeling only the front half of the store will be done by Monday but there is a lot in that front half which includes stationary…and we shall see what I get done tomorrow (todayšŸ˜…). But it’s gonna be a go either way. I’ll just keep opening up towards the back as I get along. I’m so excited to invite you in!

Ok my is perfection. Perfection!!! Wait until you see this antique cabinet that came from Pittsburgh back in my early hunting days - like 6 months ago. I have been closed for 6 months. I was closed for same amount of time between my first 2 locations. Must be the amount of time it takes for an n+n shopkeeper chrysalis to do its work. Monday is the emerging and it will take some time for my wings to dry before we can fly again…;)
