Happy birthday to R.L. Stine, the author who taught us that reading can be a little bit spooky and a lot of fun.👻🥳 Since it is also Banned Books Week, we are highlighting his legendary Goosebumps series, which spent years on challenged lists for being just a little too scary for some adults. Are you a fan of James Patterson? Here is one of the big reasons most indie bookstores adore him:

James Patterson is once again supporting independent booksellers with a revival of his Holiday Bookstore Bonus Program.

Patterson has pledged a personal contribution of $300,000, to be distributed in amounts of $500, to 600 booksellers from ABA member bookstores. Additionally, he will award 10 independent bookstores a $5000 bonus.

Booksellers can be nominated by customers, so consider submitting your nomination for anyone on staff by October 29, 2026, at 11:59 pm ET - link in the comments :)

Gonna try to give like Dolly everyday - because it always feels amazing to share a love of reading within community.

Today was a perfect day.

Every 9th grader at Rowan County's Early College got a free copy of NIGHT by Elie Wiesel on us as they stopped by during their tour of Civil Rights landmarks in Downtown Salisbury (big ups to Horizons Unlimited within RSS for offering such a trip to students in our school district).

Friends - old and new - popped in to catch up or to restock us with their books (CHASING THE STORY by David Whisenant is back on the shelf!).

Khaleelah Thompson of Quintessential Cheese, soon to be on Innes St., delighted our crowd with a gorgeous spread.

We raised a little $ for the Rowan County Literacy Council and Smart Start Rowan - excellent partners in sharing all things books and joy with our neighbors.

And we declared a baby boy the winner of our first annual Dolly lookalike contest, because he clearly loved his boots - and because we could.

Whatever you did today, may the spirit of Queen Dolly Parton have moved you and your circle towards kindness.

Everyday we get to choose joy; what a gift when everyone around us does so together despite all odds.

Hate still isn't making us great (yet again).

Yes, we are aware of negative posts in this desert that is the Metaverse trashing our downtown and calling for a boycott of our small business (plus some of our fave neighbors).

No, we don't have the time to address each one; this is nobody's first rodeo. We are busy - trying to build a community we have always dreamed to see. We are walking through downtown at night, unafraid, getting to the events that matter to our people. Because good things are happening all the time in Downtown Salisbury, NC and great things are coming.

Case in point - Dolly Day is coming on Friday 9/25. Have you got your outfit picked out yet for our Dolly lookalike contest? Suggested $5 donations to participate will go to the Rowan County Literacy Council, Inc. and Smart Start Rowan :)

Join us September 10 at 7pm for a special screening of STEEL MAGNOLIAS as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dolly Parton and come together to support literacy in our community.

A portion of proceeds from the screening will benefit the Rowan County Literacy Council, helping support their important work right here in Rowan County. South Main Book Co will also be joining us, giving guests the opportunity to make a donation to the Literacy Council and receive a free children’s book!
