Flaming Gorge Reservoir Fishing Report

🎣 Flaming Gorge Report

Flaming Gorge is looking strong heading into summer.

Recent public report data showed water around 51.3°F, with lake trout rated excellent, rainbow trout excellent, brown trout very good, kokanee starting to come on, and smallmouth bass moving into a good-to-excellent warm-water bite.

Lake trout are the main story right now. Work deeper structure, rocky points, tubes, spoons and paddle tails. Rainbows are active in the spring feeding window, and smallmouth should keep improving as water temps climb.

One important heads-up: DWR says up to one million acre-feet of water is being moved from Flaming Gorge to Lake Powell through April 2027, so anglers should check water releases and ramp conditions before going.

That one feeling we all get when it’s time to go fishing

There’s a moment on the drive up to Strawberry Reservoir when you can feel the world start to fall away.

You climb the canyon with the windows cracked just enough to let that brisk mountain air roll in.

Spring is just about to break.

The hills are waking up.
The morning is quiet.
And when you finally see the water, it’s glassy.

You know it won’t be long.

The breeze will come.
You know the chop will start.
You know the fish might be deep, and the wait might be long.

So you came prepared.

🦞 With A rod in your hand. A crawfish trap in the truck. The pot ready to boil them up!

This isn’t just fishing.

This is the kind of morning nature calls you into.

You’re at ease.

You take a deep mountain air breath.

Then it happens.

Your line goes tight.

Not a nibble.
Not a maybe.
But A fight.

Your mind starts racing because you can feel it.

This might be the big one.

The one you’ll tell stories about forever.

And for the next few minutes, nothing else exists but you, the water, and the fish on the other end of that line.

That’s Strawberry.

That’s Utah.

And that’s a day you’ll never forget.

There’s a certain feeling you only get when you step onto the Provo River with a fly rod in your hand.

The air is cooler.
The mountains feel closer.
And just around the bend, you can already see that favorite stretch of water calling you back.

For me, it brings back the kind of memories you don’t realize are shaping you at the time.

Fishing with my father.
The sound of the river moving over the rocks.
My mother making brunch on the bank while we tried to land “just one more.”

That’s what fishing in Utah does.

It slows the world down long enough for you to remember what matters.

So if you’ve been too busy, too distracted, or too far removed from the outdoors…

Go fishing Utah!

Take your kids. Call your dad. Bring a friend.

Find your corner of the river in the Uintas and make a memory worth coming back to.
