It’s been a couple years since I’ve managed to get up to Bingo Baby and see that pile of logs in my favorite little alcove of American Fork. Parenthood responsibilities kept me from getting out much in 2023 and last month I got out rope climbing as much in a month as I did all of last year. In Friday I was lucky enough to clip the chains on a route near my limits and get on an outstanding project that I hope to get back to soon.

It’s been a few years since I managed to get up to the Pipe Dream cave in Maple Canyon. Most of my days out have been with kids and hauling them up there isn’t worth the effort. We had a great day out falling on rigs we’d sent long ago, enjoying a surprisingly quiet crag for a Saturday. Hope you’re getting out and trying hard.

Between kid 1 and kid 2 it’s pretty tough to climb outside these days but I squeeze one in today. 5 hours of driving, no new sends, barely making moves even but still totally worth it. A day in can be pretty magical.

Managed to get out for a camping and climbing trip over Memorial Day weekend. Climbed a 3 pitch route right over our camp, letting the kids watch us as we progressed up the wall. And figured out how to use a BD hoodie as a kid carrier. Thanks for the support

Been waiting for our Small Business/Black Friday/Cyber Monday, consume everything code? Sorry for the wait, I went out bouldering with my son and friends for the weekend. Conditions were good, kids behaved and I sent a couple things. The sliver of a moon at sunset was pretty cool too.

Happy birthday to , the first place that I ever climbed a wall and a home for so many young climbers in Wisconsin. Once Craig came across me stuck in Milwaukees airport with a broken leg from a fall in Red Rocks and drove me half an hour home in the middle of winter. This was before I had a cell phone and my dad had changed his number, so I had no clue when they were coming. Thanks for changing the direction of my life!

I wasn’t planning to get outside climbing this month, it’s ski and training season, but, in this weather, a day of easy pitches made more sense than skiing. And it was AMAZING!
We started climbing in the shade at 20 something degrees but at the top of the first pitch we had found the sun and basked in its glory. This fat flake felt like climbing a sideways tufa and the k***s on the slab above made me pucker… and it was 5.8, ha! Had to do the highly fashionable and functional Belay Specs over sunnies to keep from being blinded by the white rock. Looking forward to more days like this! ***s

Volume way up for full value. For the first time in years, my wife and I were able to go ski touring together and it was great to get outside and enjoy the mountains. We spent 10 minutes watching this woodpecker fly between trees and look for their next meal. I also saw a white ermine/stoat running between the trees. And the ski down was pretty fun. I’m a pretty causal skier which is a nice change from the commitment and intent I put into climbing. I don’t train for it or really care how well I ski but I love the places it takes me and the space it gives me to let my thoughts wander. The long slow ascents are a little uncomfortable, like a meditation on minor suffering.

We went to the desert to gather with friends for Thanksgiving and spend some time bouldering in Moe’s Valley. Tactics were implemented to shade crux holds and the problem got sent.

Taking a kid climbing can be tough and find the right crag is key. While many would consider a short approach and a safe flat base key, I’ve realized how valuable the entertainment of passing trains can be.
